A BAD DAY FOR CHRIS HENRY

June 26, 2008

FORMER NFL PLAYER CHRIS HENRY GETS HIS SUV REPOSSESSED

Ever have one of those days?

Former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry had one today. While in court for his trial on assault charges, Henry had car repossessed.

Henry is accused of punching a University of Cincinnati student in March. He was cut by the Bengals following his arrest over the incident. That was just the latest in a string of arrests for Henry including marijuana possession, DUI and assault.

Not only did Henry lose his job with the Bengals but he has also been suspended indefinitely by the NFL. He is currently serving house arrest for his conviction on another charge. Just where he is serving the house arrest isn’t certain since, in addition to having his car repo’d, Henry has also had his home foreclosed on.

In the below mug shot, Henry has the distinction of being the only NFL player ever arrested wearing his own replica jersey.

IS MUSLIM PLAYER BEING BLACKBALLED BY THE NFL?

June 19, 2008

MUHAMMAD ABDULQAADIR

Portfolio.com and has a lengthy piece today about a Muslim football player who may have been kept out of the National Football League because of his father’s ties to terrorism. The article is also featured on Pro Football Talk.

Muhammad Abdulqaadir was an All-American running back at Southern Illinois who set the school record for touchdowns. Abdulqaadir ran for over 1,000 yards his Junior and Senior seasons and was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award which goes to the nation’s top 1-AA player. He was also a high school and JUCO All-American who ran a 4.4 40 yard dash and was originally projected as a mid-round NFL draft pick.

Despite all of these accomplishments, Abdulqaadir went unselected in the 2004 NFL draft. Not only that, but he never got invited to any team’s training camp and hasn’t received an offer or even a phone call from any NFL team since.  The running back has spent the last several years bouncing around the Arena League and the Canadian Football League.

The Portfolio.com piece speculates that the running back’s lack of NFL job offers may be directly tied to his father’s involvement as an alleged terrorist.

The FBI suspected Abdulqaadir’s father of terrorist activity. He was a friend of Zacarias Moussaoui (the so-called “20th hijacker” from 9/11.) Abdulqaadir’s father also did recruiting for a radical Sunni Muslim organization. He was detained as one of the first U.S. citizens who was a material witness after 9/11. His name also came up in connection with the World Trade Center bombing in 1993 and the Oklahoma City bombing. Abdulqaadir’s father was never arrested on terrorist carges but was convicted on a federal weapons charge. He has since been released from prison.

The Portfolio.com article quotes a source who feels that the suspected terrorist activity by his father may be the reason Muhammad Abdulqaadir has never received a chance by the “patriotic” NFL.

JAVON WALKER KNOWS HOW TO PARTY

OAKLAND RAIDERS RECEIVER JAVON WALKER

The above photos were originally obtained by spyonvegas.com and posted this morning on a number of websites including With Leather, TMZ and Kissing Suzy Kolber.

They show Oakland Raiders wide receiver Javon Walker spraying the crowd at Tryst nightclub in Las Vegas with champagne. Shortly after these photos were taken Walker was beaten unconscious and apparently robbed on a street in back of Wynn Casino (where the pictures were taken.) Reports say Walker suffered a broken orbital bone above his eye in the incident.

Las Vegas Review Journal columnist Norm! (the best in the business) was the first to report the story of Walker’s champagne dreams.

Walker is getting destroyed by various media outlets. Denver talk radio is CRUCIFYING the controversial receiver. Bronco fans remember Walker going to party in Vegas after the death of his Denver teammate Darrent Williams and missing his funeral. Meanwhile, the ESPN blog Hashmarks points out the Williams shooting also happened after a champagne spraying incident. Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall and his cousin apparently irritated gang members in a Denver club by spraying champagne on them.

Williams was shot after the incident and died in Walker’s arms. A blood-soaked Walker showed up at the Broncos training facilities the day after the shooting.

I actually used to live a couple of blocks from where the Walker assault happened in Las Vegas. It’s just a couple of hundred yards from the location where Tupac was shot.

WHEN PETERS COLLIDE: FEEL THE SEXUAL TENSION AS PETER KING INTERVIEWS JASON PETER

June 9, 2008

JASON PETER WAS AN ALL AMERICAN AND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WINNER IN COLLEGE AT NEBRASKA

In truly one of his best pieces I’ve ever read, Peter King of Sports Illustrated has a fascinating feature this week on former Nebraska football star and NFL bust Jason Peter.

The article is about Peter’s addiction to drugs and sex which he chronicles in an upcoming book.

King starts his interview with Jason Peters with the open-ended comment,

“I’m shocked you’re still alive.”

“I am too,” Peters replies.

Powerful stuff. Peter’s entire book (and the rest of King’s article) is a laundry list of self abuse:

Vicodin. Ambien. Cocaine. Crack. Heroin. GHB, the date-rape drug. Lots of others I’ve never heard of. He’s not sure if he’s been in rehab six or seven times. He’s blown most of the $6.5 million Carolina paid him over a disappointing, injury-filled NFL career with the Panthers. Nights and weeks with prostitutes so numerous … well, so numerous that his Madame at a high-rolling Manhattan brothel ran out of girls for him.

How did it all happen, this trail that led to one suicide try and thoughts of a second, when he’d use a gun instead of the drugs his body had built up such a tolerance to?

Unlike a lot of addicts-turned authors, Peter places the blame for his excesses solely on HIMSELF. Jason Peter’s book is entitled Hero: A Memoir of the Underground . It is published by St. Martin’s Press and comes out in July.

PATS LINEMAN NICK KACZUR IS A RAT; TAKES MORE OXYCONTIN THAN RUSH LIMBAUGH

June 4, 2008

NICK “THE NARC” KACZUR

Today’s Boston Globe reports that New England Patriots offensive lineman Nick Kaczur was arrested in April for illegal possession of prescription drugs. The paper also reports that following his arrest Kaczur agreed to wear a wire for the Feds on three seperate drug buys in southeastern Massachusetts.

Kaczur reportedly told the U.S. DEA he had purchased hundreds of oxycodone pills weekly from an alleged dealer. Kaczur then agreed to wear a wire and the dealer was arrested.

WILL THE NEW YORK GIANTS CUT SUPER BOWL HERO DAVID TYREE?

June 4, 2008

GIANTS WIDE RECEIVER DAVID TYREE

In this year’s Super Bowl, wide receiver David Tyree made the most famous catch in New York Giants history. Unfortunately it may be the last catch he ever makes for the club.

There is speculation that following off-season knee surgery Tyree may not even make the Giants roster.

The Giants are set on their starting receivers being Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer. The club has also settled on young backups Steve Smith and Sinorice Moss who were high draft picks by the Giants. They also drafted Mario Manningham this year.

According to the AP that could leave Tyree on the outside looking in for a job with the Giants.

Tyree says he’s not worried,

“I don’t make the decisions whether I’m on the roster or not. My job is just to go out there and do the best I can when I have the opportunity.

“I have no reason to really worry,” he said. “I’ve proven myself when I’ve been given the opportunity. I’m not that concerned. It’s not that big of a deal to me. I just have to get back to being healthy and do the things that I can do.”

“Making the catch was a great opportunity, but I can’t rest on it. I have to work hard. There’s always something to prove. You always have to have the competitive edge.”

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS WANT $7 MILLION BACK FROM JAKE PLUMMER

June 4, 2008

FORMER QB TURNED HIPPIE JAKE PLUMMER

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are attempting to recover $7 million in bonus money from retired NFL quarterback Jake Plummer. This despite the fact that the Bucs never payed the bonus or ever wrote a check to Plummer.

According to the Buccaneers fan website pewterreport.com, Tampa Bay is “trying to make him pay for not playing for the Bucs.”

An arbitration hearing over Plummer’s bonus money is scheduled to take place later this month. The Bucs maintain they have the right to recover the money even though it was paid by the Denver Broncos. They say they acquired that right when they obtained Plummer’s current contract.

BUFFALO BILLS DRAFT PICK HITS DOMESTIC ABUSE TRIFECTA

May 14, 2008

BABY BEATING BILLS RECEIVER JAMES HARDY

Www.profootballtalk.com has the story that James Hardy, a second-round pick in last month’s NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills, allegedly pulled a gun on his father. On Mother’s Day.

That makes three generations of friends and family members that Hardy has been involved in domestic altercations with.

According to Profootball Talk,

Hardy spent three nights in jail after allegedly committing battery against his girlfriend.  He was charged with domestic battery and interfering with the reporting of a crime.  Hardy eventually was released on bond.

When his girlfriend called 911, an operator heard the woman say that Hardy had “hit her and her baby.”  The line then disconnected, apparently because Hardy had yanked the phone out of the wall.

A source told the website that Hardy is a “scary dude” and dropped in the NFL Draft after the reports came out about him striking a baby.

BIG FAT JARED LORENZEN FEELS THE STING OF PENDING UNEMPLOYMENT

May 12, 2008

GIANTS QB BIG FAT JARED LORENZEN

Jared Lorenzen of the New York Giants is one of my all-time favorite NFL quarterbacks. At 6′ 4″ his listed playing weight is 285. In reality, he’s probably pushing three bills. Who doesn’t love a guy whose nicknames include The Hefty Lefty, J. Lo and The Pillsbury Throwboy? Especially when the guy with those nicknames is a qb. Hell, he’s probably the only FAT quarterback in NFL history. I’m firmly convinced the League shoots his face THIS tight on NFL.com just to make him LOOK FATTER so fans will love him even more.

Last season was an eventful year for Lorenzen. He beat out all the other quarterbacks in Giants camp for the backup job behind Eli Manning. He was the number two quarterback for the Super Bowl champion New York Giants. That won Lorenzen a Super Bowl ring. He even completed the first passes of his NFL career.

Unfortunately, backing up Eli Manning at quarterback doesn’t afford much opportunity. Lorenzen has completed just four regular season NFL passes in three years for a total of 28 yards.

Last year Lorenzen’s job consisted mainly of wearing a baseball hat and high-fiving Manning when he came off the field:

and trying to pay attention while Manning and Tom Coughlin ruled the football world:

Lorenzen did line up under center for the first time in an actual NFL game. It was such a rare occurrence here’s proof:

And when Lorenzen finally got his big chance to get some playing time against Green Bay in September (after Manning was hurt), he injured his ankle.

It’s hard to be obscure when you’re an NFL quarterback in the nation’s number one market. But, here’s Lorenzen at last year’s Super Bowl Media Day:

Completing 4 passes in three years has that effect. Lorenzen probably took more pictures at last year’s Super Bowl than were taken of him:

After drawing an NFL paycheck for the past three years the gravy train appears to be over for Big Fat Jared Lorenzen. Seeking more experience than a guy who averaged just over one completion a year for his NFL career, the Giants have signed veteran David Carr to be Eli Manning’s number two next season. Veteran Anthony Wright is also still on the Giants roster.

ANDRE’ WOODSON

But, the unkindest cut off all came for Lorenzen last month. The Giants drafted quarterback Andre’ Woodson from the University of Kentucky. That’s Lorenzen’s alma matre. Worse, Woodson and Lorenzen were actually teammates at Kentucky. Woodson was a redshirt freshman during Lorenzen’s senior season with the Wildcats. They both played their high school football in Kentucky. The two remain friendly.

Unfortunately the Giants adding two quarterbacks in the offseason (Carr and Woodson) doesn’t bode well for Lorenzen and his chances to make the team. In an interview with the Lexington Herald Leader this weekend, Lorenzen said he was “shocked” when the Giants drafted Woodson,

“Well, first of all, I was shocked that Andre fell so low,” Lorenzen said this week. “And then I was shocked from the standpoint that we already have four quarterbacks. But I do think it was a great value pick. Andre is a second- or third-round guy and you get him in the sixth round.”

“This is for a job,” Lorenzen said. “This is your livelihood. At Kentucky, I knew if I lost the quarterback job, I had a chance to win it back. But this is all about your career, your future, and taking care of your family.”

Despite having to “take care of his family,” Lorenzen said he would be glad to help Woodson learn the NFL ropes,

“It can be a friendly competition. Andre’s a Kentucky guy, so I want him to do well. I’m hoping that we can help each other out.”

“If he wants to sit down and work together and go over some things, I’d be more than glad to help him,” Lorenzen said.

In reality, barring injury, Lorenzen is screwed. Manning and Carr make big bucks and are clearly entrenched at #1 and 2. Woodson is younger than Lorenzen, will command a lower salary and teams rarely cut draft picks. He is an ideal choice for a number three quarterback where the number TWO guy never plays. Woodson was a huge star in college (he set the SEC record with 40 td passes this past season.) Before slumping at the end of the year Kentucky actually hyped Woodson for the Heisman Trophy.

Although Woodson had a great year at Kentucky, his offseason was a disaster. He played poorly at the Senior Bowl, was a flop at the combine and then scored a 14 on his Wonderlic intelligence test administered by the League. (That tied John David Booty of USC for the lowest score among QB’s.)

Still, there’s little doubt that Woodson is going to beat out Lorenzen who is unlikely to hook on with another NFL team. After that Jared Lorenzen will have to put his Kentucky education to work and find a real job. I’m sure all of this makes Lorenzen long for the days when he, not Woodson, was Kentucky’s Big Man On Campus. Literally.
