BAY MEADOWS RACETRACK CLOSES

August 20, 2008

The sport of horse racing has been dying for years.

Another example of the sport’s decline came this weekend with the closing of Bay Meadows racetrack. The track, located just outside of San Francisco in San Mateo, held its last race on Sunday.

Anyone who’s been to a track or a Las Vegas sportsbook recently knows horseracing is no longer “The Sport of Kings.” It’s “The Sport of Degenerate, Loser, Chain-smoking, Compulsive Gamblers Over 70.”

Bay Meadows opened in 1934. It was California’s oldest continually operating racetrack. It was also one of the first tracks in the country to introduce pari-mutuel wagering, the Daily Double, tote boards and the photo-finish. Legendary horses like Seabiscuit and John Henry once raced at Bay Meadows. Unfortunately, the sad truth is the land is now worth more plowed under and redeveloped.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, in recent years the track was drawing only about 3,000 people a night for races.

MUCH LIKE LOSING TICKETS FROM SUNDAY’S LAST RACE, BAY MEADOWS HAS BEEN DISCARDED

KICKING A HORSE WHILE HE’S DOWN: SEVERAL PAPERS BLAST BIG BROWN OVER STEROID USE

June 10, 2008

BIG BROWN TOOK THE STEROID WINSTROL

Several newspapers are out with stories blasting failed Triple Crown racehorse Big Brown.

The Toronto Star called Big Brown the “biggest flop of all.”  According to the paper, “No horse with the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in the bag ever crapped out as badly.” The Star accuses Big Brown of being a steroid burnout.

Meanwhile the New York Times also questioned whether Big Brown’s past success was simply the result of steroids:

Worst of all for Big Brown’s connections, perhaps, were the questions about steroids. (Trainer Rick) Dutrow told The New York Times last week that Big Brown had not had his usual shot of the anabolic steroid Winstrol since April 15, enough time for the drug to leave his system.

Was Big Brown’s poor performance because of his lack of “juice?”

BIG BROWN IS A LOSER

BIG BROWN

Once again there will be no Triple Crown winner in horse racing this year. Big Brown not only failed to win the Belmont Stakes but he became the biggest loser in horse racing history Saturday. America’s new favorite horse not only lost the race but finished DEAD LAST. 38-1 longshot Da’ Tara won the race.

Ten different horses had failed on the third leg of racing’s Triple Crown since Affirmed won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont in 1978. None of those horses failed as spectacularly as Big Brown.

Although other horses had won the first two Triple Crown races before, this time it felt different. Expectations were HUGE. Big Brown was EXPECTED to win the race. After all, his own trainer called Big Brown’s Triple Crown victory “a foregone conclusion.” Experts were predicting stud fees of $100,000 a shot (literally) if Big Brown won this race. Let’s not forget this was the first horse ever with his own Hooters contract.

Following the race jockey Ken Desormeaux threw his horse under the bus.

“I had no horse,” said Desormeaux following the race.

The horse’s owner was looking to place the blame elsewhere. Facing the media after the race, he said the last place finish was “not the horse’s fault.” Trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. had been drawing criticism for his handling of the horse all week. As beloved as Big Brown was by the racing public, Dutrow was equally despised.

Facing a possible HUGE payday with a Belmont win and the certain immortality that would come with horse racing’s first Triple Crown victory in 30 years, Dutrow decided to run Big Brown in the Belmont despite the horse having a cracked hoof. Dutrow has also had a sordid history with performance enhancing drugs in the horse racing industry.

Big Brown is without a doubt the most popular sports figure EVER that has used steroids. He also used the blood thinner Lasix throughout his career. Those drugs are not banned at ALL racetracks and it’s not like the horse can shoot HIMSELF up with drugs. But, obviously many in the media had no trouble blasting the acerbic, unlikable Dutrow following the race.

SEX IN THE CITY OR SEX IN THE STALL?

The website www.holytaco.com recently ran a poll: Who would you rather have sex with, horse-faced actress Sarah Jessica Parker from Sex and the City or an actual horse? (Namely potential Triple Crown winner Big Brown.)

The results are in and the winner is Big Brown. And, it wasn’t exactly by a nose. An amazing 72% of those taking the poll would rather have sexual intercourse with a horse.
