LEGEND?

August 20, 2008

THE LEGEND: ANDREW GAZE

Foxsports.com ran a story earlier today in which they referred to “legendary” basketball player Andrew Gaze. I would happily link you to the artice but it has been removed from the Foxsports website. Gaze talked about what a huge Olympic moment it would be if the Aussies beat Team USA.  I don’t know if the article was pulled because the U.S. kicked Australia’s ass or if it was because somebody used “Andrew Gaze” and “legend” in the same sentence.

Gaze was an okay player at Seton Hall. He played parts of two seasons in the NBA with Washington and San Antonio averaging 1.7 points per game in 26 career NBA games. Even if he was one of the “greatest” players in the history of Australia, that puts him on par with Shane Heal and Chris Anstey.

Either way he’s no Luc Longley. And how much of a “legend” was he?

STEROID SCANDAL IN OLYMPIC RACE WALKING?

August 19, 2008

How pervasive is the use of illegal performance enhancing drugs at the Olympics?

Let’s put it this way, even the Olympic WALKERS cheat.

The website Steroid Nation has the story about a possible Beijing scandal surfacing in the sport of race walking. Apparently the Russians were forced to leave their entire team of walkers behind due to ALL OF THEM having positive doping tests.

Despite having tested poitive for the drug EPO just weeks before, one Russian flew to Beijing to compete in the Olympics. Valeriy Borchin “walked away” with a gold medal.

An English paper is calling Borchin’s gold medal “a mockery.”

GAY AND BLOGGING IN CHINA

JOHN AMAECHI

Mark Spitz may not have managed a press pass to this year’s Olympics, but everybody’s favorite least favorite gay basketball player John Amaechi is an accredited media member for the Beijing games.

According to Amaechi, things are not going well on his trip to China. The only openly gay player in NBA history has been hired to write a blog and cover Olympic basketball for the BBC. Amaechi says players are “shocked’ when they see him. He also mentions an encounter he had with Kobe Bryant and says, “Things did not go well.”

Amaechi refers to snide comments by Team USA players and coaches and describes feeling “a lot of tension” when running into the American team at lunch.

NEW LEVEL OF CELEBRITY

TMZ.COM POLL

Michael Phelps is on a roll. And not just in the swimming pool. Yesterday the celebrity website TMZ.com ran one of its “Who’d You Rather?” polls. This one featured the Olympic swimmer versus actor George Clooney.

Congratulations to Phelps. He won the poll hands down. With over 100,000 people voting, Phelps had 56% of the vote, Clooney 44%. After one week in the pool and on NBC, more women would now rather have sex with Michael Phelps than George Clooney.

MICHAEL PHELPS

Michael Phelps made even more Olympic history Saturday night in Beijing. The American swimmer won his record eighth gold medal with a U.S. victory in the 400-meter medley relay.

The eight gold medals in one Olympics is a new record surpassing the seven golds won by American swimmer Mark Spitz in Munich during 1972.

MICHAEL PHELPS CONSPIRACY THEORY

August 16, 2008

A website has been created alleging that American swimmer Michael Michael Phelps’ .001 second victory in the 100 meter butterfly Friday was actually a loss. The website contends there is a conspiracy between Phelps, NBC, the company that makes the timekeeping equipment (an official Phelps sponsor), FINA, and the American government.

Geeze, they had me until the “American government” part. Obviously, the government can’t do ANYTHING right.

MARK SPITZ: NOT BITTER AFTER ALL

August 16, 2008

MARK SPITZ

As it turns out, former Olympic swimmer Mark Spitz is not the bitter-old-man caricature that he has been portrayed as by bloggers.

American swimmer Michael Phelps’ tied Spitz’s Olympic record of seven gold medals Friday with a miracle win in the 100 meter butterfly.

Following the victory, NBC arranged a joint interview with Phelps, Spitz and studio host Bob Costas. In that interview, Spitz did not come across as bitter at all. He was gracious in his praise of Phelps.

Neil Best of Newsday (the best sports media critic in America) has a complete transcript of the interview on his blog today.

Phelps attempts to break Spitz’s record and win an Olympic record eighth gold medal later tonight.

DISGRACED SPRINTER BEN JOHNSON CALLS HIMSELF “INTELLECTUALLY RETARDED”

August 16, 2008

FORMER OLYMPIC SPRINTER BEN JOHNSON AND HIS DEAD LAWYER

Former Olympic sprinter Ben Johnson is suing the estate of his late lawyer for $37 million.

Johnson was a Canadian Olympic sprinter and formerly The World’s Fastest Man. He was one of the first major athletes to be involved in a steroids scandal. In 1988 Johnson was kicked out of the Olympics and stripped of all his medals and records.

The lawsuit contends attorney Ed Futterman took advantage of Johnson. The suit also contends Johnson was incapable of understanding complex legal documents. Johnson’s own lawsuit contends, psychiatric experts concluded in 1989 that “there is overwhelming evidence that Mr. Johnson is intellectually retarded.”

Johnson is actually the second athlete to play the “retard” card. In 2000 former Los Angeles Dodgers star Pedro Guerrero was acquitted on drug charges after his lawyer convinced a Forida jury that he was too stupid to be a drug dealer. The attorney argued on record that Guerrero was a sixth grade dropout with an IQ of 70. The lawyer said since Guerrero was unable to perform simple tasks like being able to write a check or make a bed there was no way he could have dealt drugs. The jury bought it and found Guerrero innocent on all charges.
