June 27, 2008

BONNIE BERNSTEIN

Sideline reporter Bonnie Bernstein says she’s sorry about that whole suicide bomber thing.

Bernstein has apologized for comparing high school basketball players to suicide bombers. Bernstein made her comments on Wednesday while making an appearance on ESPN’s Mike and Mike radio show.

Bernstein said high school basketball players today are “programmed to pursue millions of dollars” and likened them to Palestinian children who she claimed were “programmed to become suicide bombers.”

FUNDING FOR CLEAR CHANNEL SALE FINALLY FINISHED

May 29, 2008

Clear Channel is the world’s largest radio station company. They own over 1,200 radio stations in America. According to today’s edition of Inside Radio the enormous financing deal for the sale of the company (involving multiple banks and financial institutions) has finally been completed:

Clear Channel: Have cash, will close.
Bain Capital and THL Partners have placed their portion of the funding for the $17.9 billion Clear Channel buyout into an escrow account. The banks deposited their cash last week. Clear Channel’s Mark Mays says the financing is “ready to deploy” as soon as shareholders approve the buyout.

Clear Channel is also one of the biggest outdoor advertising companies in the world. The company had previously sold their tv stations and gotten out of live events.

The company started in 1972 with a single radio station in San Antonio. By 1995 they had grown to 43 radio stations (mostly in Texas.) That’s when the Clinton administration passed The Telecommunications Act of 1996.

This act deregulated media ownership, allowing a company to own more radio stations in every market. Previously the amount of stations a company could have in any single market was severely restricted by the FCC. Clear Channel went on a buying spree, purchasing more than 70 other media companies, plus individual stations.

The company loaded its board with close personal friends of both Republicans (Tom Hicks was one of George W. Bush’s biggest donors and a friend of the Bush family) and Democrats (Vernon Jordan was a longtime Clinton advisor.)

The sale of Clear Channel was first announced in November of 2006. However, because of FCC red tape and the recent credit market crunch, the sale has taken a year-and-a-half to finalize. Apparently the deal is now final pending stockholder and FCC approval.

TALK SHOW HOST ADMITS TO DISTRIBUTING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

May 10, 2008

CHILD PORN DISTRIBUTOR/RADIO TALK SHOW HOST BERNIE WARD

I am a radio talk show host by profession. In my career I’ve worked with and met people in the industry that have done some pretty reprehensible things. Today however marks a new low.

Former San Francisco talk show host Bernie Ward has admitted to charges of distributing child pornography in a plea deal with federal prosecutors. Ward’s admission came in the form of an e-mailed plea bargain arrangement sent to prosecutors that will send him to prison for at least five years. Prosecutors are arguing for a nine year sentence.

The San Francisco Chronicle described Ward as “the most prominent liberal voice on Bay Area talk radio for more than two decades.” Ward is also a former Catholic priest (go ahead make the cheap joke.)

Here’s more from today’s San Francisco Chronicle:

Ward, 57, a former Roman Catholic priest, was a fixture on KGO-AM 810 for three hours every weeknight, known in recent years for his fervent denunciations of President Bush and the war in Iraq during his news talk show. He also hosted “God Talk,” a Sunday morning program on religion, and was a prolific fundraiser for the station’s charity drives.

But his career disintegrated Dec. 6 with the unsealing of a federal grand jury indictment, issued three months earlier, that charged him with two counts of distributing and one count of receiving Internet images of child pornography. KGO fired him Dec. 31.

At a 30-minute hearing in federal court in San Francisco, Ward admitted he was guilty of a single charge of distributing child pornography, saying it involved “exchanging an image of a minor engaged in sexually explicit activity” in December 2004. The plea agreement he signed, quoted in court, contained an admission that he had sent between 15 and 150 pornographic images via e-mail.

BERNIE WARD WHEN HE WAS “REVEREND BERNIE WARD” THE CATHOLIC PRIEST

Bernie Ward is obviously a sick, demented human being. But he is not going to prison just yet. As part of the plea deal Ward won’t be sentenced until August. He is under home confinement and allowed only to travel to and from church services and charity functions. He is also allowed to take his children to and from school. That’s right, Bernie Ward is married and has four children.

The story on how Ward was caught with kiddie porn is interesting. The host of “God Talk” was caught because of his online chat conversations with a dominatrix. Ward originally plead not guilty and was going to go with the Pete Townsend “I-had-the-pictures-on-my-computer-for-research-on-a-book” defense but he was busted by the dominatrix. According to the Chronicle:

The transcripts quote Ward as fantasizing about naked children with no apparent reference to any subject he was researching. Police said he had sent photos to the woman that showed children engaged in sexual activity.

Citing personal reasons, radio veteran Don Geronimo announced he is leaving his nationally syndicated spot at The Don and Mike Show.

DON IMUS CALLS BARACK OBAMA A “PUSSY”

April 18, 2008

Radio talk show host, Don Imus, says Barack Obama “is almost a bigger pussy” than Sen. Hillary Clinton. Imus made the comments on his April 17th show (Thursday morning.)

Imus made his comments while talking about Wednesday night’s Democratic debate. In analyzing the previous night’s debate Imus said,

I thought Senator Obama was on the defensive most of the night. But they’re both sissy boys or sissy girls, or whatever. Because they talk big when they’re out on the campaign trail…then when they show up at the debate, they fold up like a couple of cheap lawn chairs. I mean, I don’t understand that. And he’s almost a bigger pussy than she is.”

TALK SHOW HOST FIRED

April 10, 2008

Radio talk show host, Randi Rhodes, has reportedly been fired by Air America.

Rhodes had been suspended indefinitely by the network since last week. She was suspended after being caught on video calling Hillary Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro “f**cking bitches” at an Air America appearance in San Francisco. Those comments were made OFF AIR.
