FORMER RELIGIOUS NUT TURNED NUT RAINBOW MAN
If you ever watched a televised sporting event during the 70’s or 80’s you probably remember Rollen Stewart. The self-proclaimed “Rainbow Man” was at EVERY major sporting event and had a knack for self-promotion and getting on television.
The LA Times has a feature on Rainbow Man today. He is now in prison.
The former marijuana farmer turned from from loveable pop culture icon to overexposed irritant after hundreds of tv appearances. He eventually morphed from Rainbow Man with his colorful afro wigs to The John 3:16 Guy who held up bible passages at every televised sporting event.
Ironically, though he was once known as the most famous sports fan in America, Stewart now says he was never a fan at all,
“I despised sports,” he says.
Claiming the Rapture was coming, Stewart took a group of hostages at gunpoint in a bizarre 1992 incident at a hotel near L.A.’s Skid Row. He threatened to shoot at airplanes taking off from nearby Los Angeles International Airport, and covered the hotel room windows with “John 3:16” placards.
Rainbow Man was sentenced to six life terms in prison. Stewart has been denied parole three times and doesn’t think he will ever get out of prison,
“Jesus will come back before I get out,”
