MIKE AND THE MAD DOG OFFICIALLY DONE

August 15, 2008

CHRIS “MAD DOG” RUSSO

The pioneering “Mike and the Mad Dog” sports talk radio show is finished.

Radio station WFAN in New York announced late Thursday that Chris “Mad Dog” Russo was leaving the station. Mike Francesa will continue to host the show’s time slot solo.

Neil Best of Newsday broke the story. Best first reported in June that the ground-breaking duo was likely to break up.

WFAN first paired Francesa and Russo together for “Mike and the Mad Dog” in 1989. The show was two weeks short of its 19th anniversary.

“Mike and the Mad Dog” was the best known and most successful talk show in sports talk history. The duo won a Marconi award in 2000 as “Personality of the Year” for a major market. They were the first sports talk hosts ever to win the award.

They were also a hit financially. WFAN is almost always the top billing radio station in the country. Ironically, money was probably the reason FAN let the 48-year-old Russo go. He made $1.3 million dollars a year and under inept management the station was drowning in red ink. WFAN’s parent company reportedly ran up $150 million in debt. That wasn’t Russo’s fault. “Mike and the Mad Dog” took in a reported $15-17 million dollars every year in ad revenue. Even in a soft advertising economy this year.

Rumors have Russo joining Sirius satellite radio.

ANNOUNCER CHOOSES DON IMUS OVER ESPN

July 27, 2008

WARNER WOLF

Veteran radio announcer Warner Wolf has been dropped from doing weekday updates by ESPN 1050 in New York. Wolf had been doing sports updates for both ESPN and Don Imus on WABC.

In his blog “Watchdog,” Newsday’s Neil Best says Wolf was given a choice by ESPN 1050 management. Pick one job. ESPN made their decision after Imus made critical “personal” comments about ESPN Radio national hosts “Mike and Mike.” Wolf chose to remain loyal to his primary meal ticket – Imus.

It’s hard to believe Wolf is still working. He’s 71-years-old and has been doing local television in New York (WABC and WCBS) and Washington D.C. since the early ’60s. Unfortunately he was NEVER any good. He is so old that his catchphrase is “Let’s go to the videotape.” That’s right, they didn’t HAVE videotape when Warner Wolf started his tv career.

Wolf’s career peeked in the mid ’70s when he was named to the Monday Night Baseball crew. He was bad at that too.

STOP THE PRESSES: SPORTS TALK SHOW HOST HAS ACTUAL SEX WITH A PLAYBOY PLAYMATE

July 2, 2008

 MONICA CHAIREZ

ESPN LAS VEGAS RADIO HOST PAULY (WITH MIKE TYSON IN BACKGROUND)

Las Vegas sports talk show host Paul Howard of ESPN 1100 is a member of a pretty exclusive club. As far as I know, the club is so exclusive it has a membership of exactly ONE.

“Pauly” is an AM talk radio host who has actually had sex with a Playboy Playmate.

There is an asterisk: *retroactively

The sex wasn’t retroactive but the girl was. Howard dated Monica Chairez when she was an up and coming Las Vegas model. Now Chairez is scheduled to be a centerfold in an upcoming issue of Playboy (CLICK HERE FOR THE PHOTOS –NSFW!!!!).

I’d personally ask Pauly what it was like to have thousands and thousands of men looking at your ex-girfirend naked but, knowing Chairez, he ALREADY KNEW what it was like to have thousands and thousands of guys see her naked.

Her family must be extremely proud. USC alum and former Clark County district judge Don Chairez, who ran for Nevada Supreme Court Justice in 2006, can’t wait to run again for office on a strong family values platform. Mark it down, Chairez is very committed to integrity.

Because of campaign contributions from lawyers and casinos appearing before them, said Don Chairez, a former Las Vegas state judge, “Nevada judges find themselves losing or bargaining away their integrity or independence.”

NOT A SMART MOVE: BONNIE BERNSTEIN COMPARES HIGH SCHOOL HOOPSTERS TO SUICIDE BOMBERS

June 27, 2008

BONNIE BERNSTEIN

Sideline reporter Bonnie Bernstein says she’s sorry about that whole suicide bomber thing.

Bernstein has apologized for comparing high school basketball players to suicide bombers. Bernstein made her comments on Wednesday while making an appearance on ESPN’s Mike and Mike radio show.

Bernstein said high school basketball players today are “programmed to pursue millions of dollars” and likened them to Palestinian children who she claimed were “programmed to become suicide bombers.”

MIKE AND THE MAD DOG MAY BE TOAST

June 22, 2008

MIKE FRANCESA AND CHRIS “MAD DOG” RUSSO

There is a disturbing trend going on in sports talk radio these days. Stations throughout the country are firing big name sports talk show hosts in their never-ending effort to slash salaries.

In the latest piece of stunning news from the industry, Newsday has the story today that WFAN may be getting rid of longtime sportstalkers Mike and The Mad Dog.  The article is not some tabloid piece of idle speculation. It’s author, Neil Best, is the top sports media writer in the country.

Best calls the Mike Francesa and Chris Russo show “the most successful, influential show in sports talk radio history.” Yet, Best says, the show itself could soon be history.

Best writes about a rumored rift and conflict in personalities between Francesa and Russo. However, it’s highly unlikely that either host would simply walk away from million dollar plus salaries while still under contract. The bottom line for scumbag radio companies is always the bottom line.

According to the lastest figures available, Francesa made $1.4 million a year and Russo $1.3 million.

That shouldn’t be a concern since WFAN raked in over $20 million in sales last year and the ratings for Mike and The Mad Dog are up 26 percent since last year. Unfortunately it is. Why? Because the guy who heads the company that owns WFAN is a blithering moron.

Jeff Smulyan is the former owner of the Seattle Mariners baseball team. While he was the M’s owner the team almost became the first club in MLB history to not have enough money to make payroll. Since Smulyan is too stupid to get a job in any respectable business he started his own radio company. Emmis Broadcasting now owns seven radio stations including WFAN.

Today’s New York Times business section has an article that says Smulyan may be selling off one of his Boston Jazz stations in an effort to pay off some of the company’s debt which is reported to be over $150 million.

I have a lot of respect for Neil Best, but if Francesa, Russo or both get fired it’s not because of a “personality conflict” or to “pursue other media interests.” It’s because another cheap, evil, stupid, monolithic corporation is looking to cut salary.

CHICAGO SPORTSTALK HOST LATEST TO BE ASKED TO TAKE PAY CUT

June 9, 2008

MIKE NORTH

WSCR AM talkshow host Mike North is the latest sports talker to be offered a paycut by his employer.

North currently makes a reported $1.5 million a year according to today’s Chicago Tribune. Station management is negotiating with North (whose contract is up July 1st) to cut that salary nearly in half.

A former hot dog vendor, North  has been getting clobbered in the rating by the syndicated “Mike and Mike” show on ESPN affiliate WMVP recently.

The Tribune article quotes an “industry insider” as saying,

“They know they’re getting killed with North in mornings, but they still want him to have a presence.”

MARK MADDEN FIRED

May 28, 2008

MARK MADDEN

One of the country’s most controversial radio talk show hosts has been fired. ESPN’s Pittsburgh affiliate, WEAE, fired Mark Madden following his comments last week about Senator Edward Kennedy.

After it was discovered that Sen. Kennedy has a malignant brain tumor Madden said (live on the air),

“I’m very disappointed to hear Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts is near death because of a brain tumor. I always hoped Senator Kennedy would live long enough to be assassinated. And I wonder if he will receive a get well card from the Kopechne family.”

Madden also once served as a color commentator for WCW wrestling.

MEDIA CRITIC

March 29, 2008

 cbarkley.jpg

Charles Barkey has never been short on opinions. Recently, on the Dan Le Batard radio show Barkley had these words of criticism for several media types,

“Seems to me that the white guys don’t know anything about the sports and all the black guys want to talk about race … Jay Mariotti, Skip Bayless, they don’t know anything about sports. Jason [Whitlock] and Jemele Hill, they always talk about race, because they know that’s controversy.”“If it wasn’t for guys like myself, all these quote, unquote, sports fans would be listening to Skip Bayless, Jay Mariotti, Mike Lupica – the little midget … I like ESPN a lot, but they want to dominate the world.”“I’m not going to let all these losers, like Bayless and Mariotti and Lupica … they can say what they want to. I’m gonna say what I want to. They’re going to deal with it or they’re going to shut the hell up. I don’t care.”

“ESPN rode all those clowns out there everyday like they’re experts in every sport … first off, they’re not experts in every sport. Trust me – Jay Mariotti, Skip Bayless, and now, Jemele Hill – they’re just people giving their opinion.”

OSCAR’S NIECE – DAISY DE LA HOYA: I AM SEX, DRUGS, AND ROCK AND ROLL

March 4, 2008

Hooray!

daisy-1.jpgAs it turns out, Oscar De La Hoya’s niece, Daisy, is a MAJOR slut.

She has some “publicity photos” out to promote her appearance on this season’s VH1 show “Rock of Love 2.”

The 25-year-old wannabe describes herself as “a heart breakin’ rock n’ roll rebel” whose musical sound is “sugar coated razor blades with sex on top.” She also proclaims, “I am sex, drugs and rock and roll.”

Publicity photo #1 features Ms. De La Hoya prominently spreading her legs and holding up a bottle of Jack Daniels. In the foreground of the picture there appears to be lines of cocaine. (She later told TMZ.com “it’s flour.”)

Shot # 2 has the added benefit of her smoking and covered with tats. There doesn’t appear to be one single picture on the face of the earth where De La Hoya is NOT smoking a cigarette.
