A group of surgeons is speaking out against the latest trend in cosmetic surgery-vaginal reconstruction. A trade organization of obstetricians and gynaecologists says the latest craze in plastic surgery is a procedure called a “designer vaginoplasty.”
The surgery is also marketed under the terms “revirginization” and “G-spot amplification.” Critics say the procedure, where a woman’s vagina is actually surgically altered to “tighten it up,” has no medical reason for being performed. They say the surgery merely exploits insecure and vulnerable women. The group criticizing “vagina reconstruction” strongly condemned the procedure. They say women who undergo the procedure are being vitimized and may “actually need psychological help.”
The surgery also has the possibility of causing severe physical side effects such as scarring, permanent disfigurement, infection, and altered sexual sensations. The procedure is also relatively expensive for cosmetic surgery. It generally costs at least $10,000.
