NIKE CONSPIRACY ?

July 4, 2008

Via AOL Fanhouse and CNBC:

Darren Rovell has developed a conspiracy theory involving Nike and Team USA Basketball.

All of the members of Team USA (pictured above) are Nike clients. Except Dwight Howard. You’ll notice in the above photo you can see the (Nike) shoes of all the players. Except Dwight Howard. Coach Mike Krzyzewski is CONVENIENTLY covering up the Adidas logo on Howard’s shoes.

Coincidence? All of the players are lined up in descending order based on height. Except Howard and Chris Bosh. They are switched around.

Nike is no stranger to Olympic basketball controversy. In 1992, after the U.S. won the gold medal, Dream Teamers, most notably Nike endorser Michael Jordan, draped themselves with American flags on the medal stand. They did so to cover up the Reebok logos on their official Team USA warm-up jackets. Coincidentally, the New York Times revisits that story in an article today.

A CNBC poll asked “Do you think Dwight Howard’s positioning is a coincidence?”

Naturally, 87% said “no.”

It’s a conspiracy.

WHO’S ON THE U.S. OLYMPIC BASKETBALL TEAM?

June 21, 2008

Team USA will announce its official 12 man roster for the U.S. Olympic mens basketball team on Monday. Several of the squad’s members are already known. The team will basically consist of the same players that rolled to the FIBA championships last summer in Las Vegas. However, there have been a few alterations to the roster.

KOBE BRYANT

LEBRON JAMES

Team USA will once again be anchored by NBA superstars Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. Even though Bryant was banged up in the NBA Finals against Boston, the LA Times recently had an item about Bryant emphatically reiterating to Lakers teammate Pau Gasol his desire to play in the Olympics and win a gold medal.

Several websites and blogs (including this one by Wendell Wallace) have speculated about who else is going to be on Team USA.

Obviously young Orlando Magic superstar Dwight Howard will be Team USA’s primary big man.

DWIGHT HOWARD

The AP had an article last week that confirmed Dwyane Wade, Jason Kidd, Michael Redd, Tayshaun Prince and Chris Paul are on the team. Carmelo Anthony has also announced he will play for Team USA.

CARMELO ANTHONY

Today’s Salt Lake Tribune had a story that Jazz players Carlos Boozer and Deron Williams are also on the final roster of Team USA. If the AP and Salt Lake Tribune stories are true, we know the identity of 11 of the 12 players on the U.S. roster: They are Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade, Jason Kidd, Michael Redd, Tayshaun Prince, Carlos Boozer and Deron Williams.

That leaves one final roster spot open for Team USA. Amare Stoudemire and Chauncy Billups have already withdrawn from Team USA even though they played in the FIBA championships. That leaves designated shooter Mike Miller as the only previous member of Team USA that hasn’t been announced as a returning member. Miller could still be a member of the 12 man roster. However, the above roster is heavy on guards with the additions of Paul, Redd  and Deron Williams. An educated guess would be that team USA will likely add a big man to replace Miller. Chris Bosh would seem to be a logical choice.
