RACISM ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL

RACIST BAR OWNER MIKE NORMAN OF “MULLIGAN’S” IN MARIETTA, GEORGIA

Think racism isn’t still alive and rearing its ugly head in America?

Check out the t-shirts being sold by an “ultra-conservative” bar owner in Marietta, Georgia. The shirts feature the slogan, “Obama in ’08.” Above the slogan is a picture of the cartoon monkey Curious George eating a banana.

What an ass!

There was a protest of the shirts in front Mulligans yesterday. A whole thirteen people showed up. So much for the “New South.” Way to go Georgia!

The Boston Herald was one of the first papers to cover this story. They put it in their business section. Judging from some of the comments posted on the Herald’s website I’m sure most of the people in Boston think the shirt is just good business.

Here are a couple of the comments:

The t-shirt is hilarious. Taking offense is no reason for a lawsuit. Good luck!

I am just curious what it actually means.

Hey, calm down fellas, Southerners hate Blacks and foreigners just like the Arabs hate all Americans, what is new about that? Let bygones be bygones and just move on!! And if you really want to deal with it, just bomb the Southerners just like bombing Iraq!! Let’s get rid of all the ignorant bastards around the world !! 🙂

Personally, I think the smiley 🙂 at the end of the posting about bombing everyone was a nice touch.

Publishers of the Curious George childrens book series have threatened legal action against Norman. So have the producers of the Curious George tv show but so far nothing has been done. Meanwhile he’s just gotten all sorts of free publicity for his business and any lawsuit would probably bring even more.

Now I’ve just given the guy some free publicity. Since I’ve already helped Mr. Norman out, I’d like to offer a suggestion for a new sign for the front of his racist establishment:

RED SOX NATION IS FULL OF RACISTS

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Torii Hunter told the Press-Enterprise of Riverside, Calif., that until the last couple of years, he regularly heard racist taunts when visiting Fenway Park in Boston as a member of the Minnesota Twins.

“I’ve been called whatever they call me – a lot – since I was a kid,” Hunter told the newspaper. “My first five or six (years), I was ‘That N-word.’ Some people would chant that out, some people would throw beer or whatever . . . batteries.”

ARE CUBS FANS RACISTS?

Chicago Cubs fans are being accused of racism after an article appeared in today’s Chicago Sun Times. Vendors outside of Wrigley Field were selling headbands in  “honor” of new Cubs outfielder, Kosuke Fukudome. The faux hachimaki headbands were sold along with t-shirts, which say “Horry Kow!” and picture a slant-eyed Cub with huge Harry Caray frames.

If you don’t find the merchandise from the above video offensive, here’s a quote from Fukudome himself,

I don’t know what the creator of the shirt meant this to be, but they should make it right,” Fukudome said through his interpreter after being shown one of the shirts Thursday. ”Maybe the creator created it because he thought it was funny, or maybe he made it to condescend the race. I don’t know.”

KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR SAYS “HORTON HEARS A WHO” PROMOTES RACISM

April 17, 2008

SURELY, HE CAN’T BE SERIOUS? HE IS SERIOUS AND DON’T GO SEE THE MOVIE “HORTON HEARS A WHO”

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the leading scorer in the history of professional basketball. Despite this fact, he has been unable to secure full-time employment in his chosen field-basketball.

Because of this, Abdul-Jabbar moonlights in a variety of areas. He is a part-time actor and writer (among other things.) He recently made an appearance on The Colbert Report portraying a stage manager who was sent out on a mission to find Nazi Gold.

Abdul-Jabbar is also a columnist with The Huffington Post. Today he has an interesting article online concerning racism. Abdul-Jabbar makes the argument that the new Dr. Seuss children’s movie, “Horton Hears a Who,” promotes racism.

Abdul-Jabbar specifically absolves children’s author Dr. Seuss from the controversy. He calls the original book “a timeless tale that has been delighting children since it was first published in 1954.” Abdul-Jabbar’s problem is with the movie adaptation of the book that is currently playing in theaters. Specifically, a subplot in the movie.

To make a simple children’s book a full-length 88 minute movie, the producers of the movie added a subplot. In the movie, the mayor of Whoville “has 96 cheerful daughters and one brooding son.”

“This,” says Abdul-Jabbar, “is where things take a nasty turn. Basically, the mayor ignores his 96 daughters in order to groom his uninterested son to become mayor.” According to Abdul-Jabbar this will give millions of children the impression that “a single son is worth more than 96 daughters. That boys are inherently more valuable than girls, and more likely to be successful than girls.”

Abdul-Jabbar concludes, “If our society is willing to tolerate any form of social injustice and discrimination toward any single group, then they have created a breeding ground for injustice [and racism] throughout society.”

IS LEBRON MAGAZINE COVER RACIST?

March 20, 2008

lebronvogue.jpg

LeBron James is a basketball player who transcends his sport. James is even on the cover of this month’s Vogue magazine. That makes the Cleveland Cavaliers star just the third man in history (following Richard Gere and George Clooney) to appear on the fashion magazine’s cover.

But putting an African American man on their cover for the first time in its history has actually led to charges of racism against Vogue.

ABC news managed to dig up a history professor who says the image of a snarling black man with his arm around the waist of a beautiful white woman actually invokes images of racism. The professor says this is age-old symbolism that can be seen in white culture from King Kong movies all the way back to ancient pottery. Professor Jason Rosenfeld, who teaches art history at Marymount Manhattan College says,

“Here you have an image of a black male athlete in an exceptionally aggressive stance, wide footed, bending over, clutching her with his arm,” said Jason Rosenfeld, professor of art history at Marymount Manhattan College. “It’s one thing to have an athlete in that kind of pose and with that kind of expression on a court after he or she has done something miraculous. It’s another thing to couple it with someone who is of an entirely different ilk and gender. That turns it into a racially charged image.”

“When you’re for the first time putting a black man on the cover, and this is the way you’re depicting him, it means that you’re going nowhere,” Rosenfeld said. “Pose LeBron in the pose of a Greek God and pose her as a Venus — then you’re upping the conversation.”

HEY NBA, OKLAHOMA CITY IS FULL OF RACISTS

March 14, 2008

The irony was overwhelming.

On a day when Oklahoma City was virtually guaranteed an NBA franchise (thanks Washington State Legislature!), their fans revealed what racist hicks they really are.

sonicsok.jpg

In a brilliant article, basketball writer, Darnell Mayberry, of The Oklahoman, pointed out just how ignorant some of the residents of Oklahoma City could be. Mayberry compiled quotes from his newspaper’s message boards, other pieces written by The Oklahoman and callers to local talk radio.

Frankly, it’s embarrassing.

The piece features quotes from various OKC residents talking about the prospect of NBA basketball coming to their town. And they don’t seem very happy about it.

Citing every possible ignorant stereotype, fans openly wondered if the NBA’s presence would increase Oklahoma City’s crime rate and drag down the city.

Unbelievable.

Some samples: “We don’t want the NBA, with its image problems, fatherless children, egomaniacs and shootings. No thanks.”

And, says Mayberry, suggestions for possible team nicknames included “Posse,” “Thugs” and “Hoodlums.”

Man, those Oklahoma City fans are really stuck in the 80’s.

Actually, I was thinking 1880’s:

And, before you accuse ME of doing some stereotyping of my own, here’s a couple of facts for you.

kkk.jpg

Civil Rights groups that monitor hate organizations list Oklahoma City as a CURRENT location of Neo-Nazi activity.

Oklahoma is also the home of multiple chapters of the Knights of The Bayou (an offshoot of the KKK.)

kkkbornok.jpg

Sure, this guy was recently fired as a NEBRASKA state trooper for joining the Klan, but he’s an Oklahoma native son.

kkkhc2.jpg

And both the History Channel and Wikipedia cite Oklahoma as a traditional hotbed of Klan activity.

So, here’s some free marketing advice for Sonics owner Clay Bennett. Since the fans in your hometown may not be into their new basketball team, here’s some additional memorabilia you might consider selling:

Each item is available for purchase directly off the KKK’s official website. (seriously!)

And there’s something for the whole (Oklahoma) family:

It’s bad enough that a great city like Seattle is going to lose its basketball team. But, losing it to a place like Oklahoma City is the worst!
