SOME CONGRESSMEN BELIEVE OUR TROOPS SHOULD RISK THEIR LIVES IN IRAQ BUT NOT BE ALLOWED TO READ PLAYBOY MAGAZINE WHILE THEY DO SO
To date over 4,000 American servicemen and women have been killed fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Those people died protecting our freedom. Now they’re about to have some of their freedoms stripped away by ONE overzealous conservative Congressman.
Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga., has introduced the Military Honor and Decency Act (H.R. 5821). The bill is neither honorable nor decent. Its sole purpose is to prevent military exchanges from selling the magazines Playboy and Penthouse on military bases.
In an interview with the Army Times, Broun says our troops “should not see their honor sullied” by being able to buy magazines like Playboy OF THEIR OWN FREE WILL. He wants the government to have greater control over what the troops decide THEY want to read. Broun says he is against taxpayers “footing the costs of distributing pornography” on military bases.
Currently it is illegal for Army bases to sell pornography. However, Playboy was determined not to be pornography by the Defense Department’s Resale Activities Board of Review. That ruling is similar to many private companies-for example many convenience stores (like 7/11) don’t sell pornographic material but DO sell Playboy.
Penthouse magazine was initially banned by the military. However, new ownership and a new editing team have revised the magazine and convinced the DoD to give permission to sell Penthouse on military bases for a one year TRIAL BASIS.
Broun isn’t satisfied with the ruling by the Defense Department. HE wants to determine what is pornography and have Congress censor what soldiers are allowed to read.
