CBS HAPPY WITH MMA RATINGS

June 2, 2008

KIMBO SLICE

CBS is reportedly thrilled by the tv ratings from its initial showing of MMA.

According to preliminary Nielsen numbers, CBS won Saturday night and cleaned up in every key demopraphic thanks to the telecast of Elite XC. Despite almost universal ridicule for what went on in the cage (Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports called it an “entertainining disaster”) there were plenty of positives to take from the initial edition of the CBS “Saturday Night Fights.”

Most importantly, according to USA Today and their media column, CBS’s ratings for men 18-34 were up %271 from their regular Saturday night programming. If you watched the telecast, this allowed the Tiffany Network to load up on fast food and video game commercials as well as other sponsors who would ordinarily NEVER touch the station in that time slot.

Also, Saturday’s ratings don’t even include the main event of the evening-the Kimbo Slice fight. The production value of the program was so incompetent that the show ran 45 minutes late. Therefore, NONE of the Kimbo slice fight (which took place after 11:30) was measured in the ratings.

SOME CBS AFFILILIATES TO BLACK OUT ELITE XC CARD THIS WEEKEND

May 30, 2008

The New York Post is reporting in its Friday edition that though MMA is making its network tv debut this weekend, not everyone will get to see the fights. Several markets are blacking the matches out. For instance, MMA fans in Pennsylvania are being forbidden from seeing the card.

Mixed Martial Arts fights are illegal in the state of Pennsylvania and local tv affiliates are interpreting that to mean that the CBS Elite XC bouts can’t even be TELEVISED in Pennsylvania. Therefore, the Elite XC card featuring Kimbo Slice will not be shown in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh or any other stations in Pennsylvania.

Outraged fans in Pennsylvania have responded by flooding tv station phone lines and internet message boards.

MMA FIGHTER GETS THE CRAP KICKED OUT OF HIM, NO REALLY!

May 28, 2008

In a recent MMA bout in Louisiana fighter Corey Wethey was struck so hard he reportedly lost control of his bowels-and crapped his pants right in the ring. The incident was captured brilliantly by Deuce of Davenport as well as several other blogs.

According to a local newspaper:

The fight — the seventh of the night – began like any other. (Opponent Fred) Mitchell and Wethey left their corners, tapped gloves and traded punches. After landing a knee to Wethey’s body, Mitchell said he began to smell something foul.

As the fight prolonged, Mitchell said the smell continued to worsen. Eventually, he removed his mouth piece and expressed his concerns to the ring official.

“He s— himself,” Mitchell said repeatedly.

The incident required a 10 minute intermission while officials scrubbed down the ring. Perhaps the SECOND best part of this story is that after Wethey soiled himself he tried to use that to his advantage. After the bout resumed Wethey reportedly locked Mitchell’s head between his feces laden thighs.

Wetherby ended up being disqualified and lost the fight. A local newspaper speculates the incident was so embarrassing Wethey’s MMA career may be over or he may have to change his name.

CHRIS LEBEN

Www.cagepotato.com had this interesting item:

MMA fighter Chris Leben may be out of UFC 85 in London. He’s in jail.

Leben recently turned himself in on what was originally described as a “minor” probation violation. He was expected to be sentenced to just a couple days in jail. Instead the judge ordered Leben jailed immediately and gave him 35 days.

Leben is scheduled to be released May 27th. UFC 85 and his fight with Michael Bisping takes place on June 7th.

To quote one of the readers of Cage Potato who posted on this subject,“Bummer dude.”

TRAVIS LUTTER DROPPED BY UFC

April 30, 2008

TRAVIS LUTTER DONE WITH UFC

The website www.mmajunkie.com broke a couple of stories this week. They were the first to report that Travis Lutter, the winner of Season 4 of The Ultimate Fighter, has been dropped by UFC. Lutter recently suffered a second-round TKO to Rich Franklin at UFC 83.

MICHAEL BISPING

The website is also reporting that fighter Michael Bisping has “saved” UFC 85 in by agreeing to replace Chuck Liddell as a headliner on the June card in London. That may be overstating things a bit, but it’s an unbelievably quick turnaround for Bisping who just fought April 19th on the UFC card in Montreal.

LIDDELL OFFICIALLY OUT FOR UFC 85

April 22, 2008

The Ultimate Fighting Championship officially reported on their website what has been speculated about for nearly a week. Chuck Liddell is injured and is pulling out of UFC 85.

Liddell has a hamstring injury. UFC 85 is a major international event for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. It is being held at London’s O2 arena June 7th. Liddell’s withdrawal weakens an already shallow card.

UFC was concerned enough about perception to put this disgusting picture of Chuck Liddell’s hamstring on their website:

STARNES BOOTED FROM UFC

April 22, 2008

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has dropped Kalib Starnes.

Starnes fought Nate Quarry Saturday in UFC 83. During the match Starnes actually RAN BACKWARDS to get away from Quarry and generally refused to engage him for the entire fight. Canadian fans booed Starnes (the fight was in Montreal.) None of the other Canadian fighters were booed Saturday night.

In a postfight interview Quarry said,

“I think if you’re fighting in the UFC, you’ve got to come to fight,” Quarry told UFC.com.”I would much rather get knocked out than lose a decision running backwards.”

Monday UFC President Dana White went even further,

“He just doesn’t belong in the UFC and after his performance the other night, he should consider a new line of work.”

Starnes is a product of The Ultimate Fighter reality tv show. He had previously beaten Chris Leben and Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald and was 8-2 going into his fight with Quarry.

KEN SHAMROCK SUING UFC

April 19, 2008

MMA fighter, Ken Shamrock, is suing the UFC.

Shamrock claims ZUFFA (the parent company of UFC) violated a two-fight contract he signed before his October 2006 match with Tito Ortiz. Shamrock was soundly beaten by Ortiz in that fight. He announced his retirement after the match.

Now Shamrock wants his money. He has filed a lawsuit in Nevada. The original deal called for him to be paid for a rematch with Ortiz and one other fight.

Shamrock is one of only three fighters in the UFC Hall of Fame.

NEW YORK POST SAYS TITO ORTIZ IS LEAVING UFC

April 17, 2008

Today’s Page Six of The New York Post says UFC fighter, Tito Ortiz, is retiring from MMA to pursue an acting career. They also call porn star, Jenna Jameson, “the Yoko Ono of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.”

Jenna Jameson has become the Yoko Ono of the Ultimate Fighting Championship world. Insiders say that since Tito “Baby Huey” Ortiz hooked up with the former porn star more than a year ago, his interest in going back to the Octagon has dimmed. “He has Hollywood aspirations now,” sniffed one friend. Not that his ennui has gone unnoticed. Ortiz is fighting Lyoto Machida in Las Vegas on May 24 – which will be his last fight. “His contract will not be renewed,” said a source. A rep for the UFC declined comment.”
