Meanwhile the date for the Joe Calzaghe/Roy Jones Jr. fight has officially been changed. The two will now fight November 8th at Madison Square Garden in New York. Calzaghe continues to maintain that will be the final fight of his undefeated career.

Finally, Vitali Klitschko returns to the ring after a four-year abscence. The older Klitschko brother takes on Samuel Peter for the WBC heavyweight championship October 11th. The fight will be broadcast on Showtime and is not pay-per-view.

JOE CALZAGHE

Boxer Joe Calzaghe has abandoned his WBC super middleweight title. Calzaghe hopes to set up a big payday with a fight against former champion Roy Jones Jr.

The 36-year-old Calzaghe is still the WBO and WBA super middleweight champion. He would have to move up to light heavyweight to fight Jones. Calzaghe fought as a light heavyweight earlier this year when he defeated Bernard Hopkins. The proposed fight with Roy Jones jr. would happen in September.

With the retirement of Floyd Mayweather, Calzaghe is one of the world’s top boxers. He has never lost a fight (45-0) in his 15 year professional career.

CALZAGHE BATTLES TO SPLIT DECISION WIN OVER HOPKINS

April 20, 2008

Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion, Joe Calzaghe, remained undefeated with a split decision win over veteran boxer Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas tonight. The win moves Calzaghe’s record to 44-0 (with 32 knockouts.)

The 43-year-old Hopkins had Calzaghe in trouble early with a first round knockdown but Calzaghe seemed to take control in the late rounds of the fight. Calzaghe was the aggressor and landed the most punches ever against a Hopkins opponent (223 according to CompuBox stats.)

Still, Hopkins scored the early knockdown and seemed to land the fight’s best shots. The fight was scored 115-112, 116-111 Calzaghe, 114-113 Hopkins.

Before the fight Hopkins had said, “I would never let a white boy beat me. Never.”

He was wrong.
