HOW DESPERATE ARE THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS?

May 25, 2008

FORMER MICHIGAN CENTER ROBERT “TRACTOR” TRAYLOR (SEEN HERE ON DEFENSE) DURING HIS GLORY DAYS AT MICHIGAN

The NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers are desperate. Desperate and pathetic. Not to mention stupid.

According to today’s Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Cavaliers have signed journeyman center Robert “Tractor” Traylor in an effort to improve their front-court depth. The paper says Traylor will play for the Cavs Summer League team in Las Vegas.

That is if he’s not in prison.

The paper says Cleveland signed Traylor based on his play in Puerto Rico (11.7 points and 7.8 rebounds in the regular season). The article says several scouts have proclaimed Traylor is ready to return to the NBA. It also says signing Traylor will would mean “more toughness inside” for the Cavaliers.

Unfortunately the only “inside toughness” Traylor may be showing will be in prison.

Just a couple weeks ago, Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports ran a brilliant expose on Trayor. The article detailed how Traylor was involved with drug kingpin Quasand Lewis (who just happens to be Traylor’s cousin.)

Traylor has been accused of laundering $4 million of drug money for the same cousin. Lewis is already in prison. Authorities say he has sold an estimated $178 million in marijuana and cocaine over the course of his “career” as a drug dealer, making Quasand Lewis arguably the most prolific drug dealer in Detroit history.

AUTHORITIES CONFISCATED SOME OF THE $178 MILLION IN DRUG MONEY QUASAND LEWIS MADE

You might argue that a man is innocent until proven guilty-that the charges against Traylor are simply allegations until he has his day in court and is proven guilty. Unfortunately, Traylor has already PLEADED GUILTY to tax and money laundering charges.

Under his plea agreement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Traylor faces the prospect of 8 to 14 months in prison when U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn sentences him in a few months.

That brings up another point. Why is the league (or any of its franchises) allowing someone convicted on drug and money laundering charges to suit up? Even if it’s just the Summer League. After all, the NBA can suspend a player five games just for SMOKING WEED.

What’s the proper suspension for someone who has been CONVICTED of aiding one of the biggest drug kingpins in U.S. history?

All of this leaves out another small detail. “Tractor” Traylor sucks. He was a huge (literally) bust in the NBA. His career scoring average is 4.8 points per game. In fact, Traylor never averaged more than 5.7 points in seven NBA seasons. He’s also over 30, been out of the league for four years, and weighs well over 300 pounds.

Hey, but at least he’s a good clubhouse influence.

LEBRON JAMES TELLS HIS MOTHER, “SHUT YOUR ASS UP!” DURING CELTICS GAME

The USA Today is reporting:

Before he silenced the Boston Celtics last night, LeBron James first had to quiet down his mother, Gloria.  And you can tell from this AP photo by Marc Duncan that he was none too happy about it.

Ms. James came roaring into the action in the second quarter when her son was wrapped up on a breakaway dunk attempt by Paul Pierce.

“I told her to sit down, in some language I shouldn’t have used,” James said. “Thank God today wasn’t Mother’s Day.”

IS LEBRON MAGAZINE COVER RACIST?

March 20, 2008

LeBron James is a basketball player who transcends his sport. James is even on the cover of this month’s Vogue magazine. That makes the Cleveland Cavaliers star just the third man in history (following Richard Gere and George Clooney) to appear on the fashion magazine’s cover.

But putting an African American man on their cover for the first time in its history has actually led to charges of racism against Vogue.

ABC news managed to dig up a history professor who says the image of a snarling black man with his arm around the waist of a beautiful white woman actually invokes images of racism. The professor says this is age-old symbolism that can be seen in white culture from King Kong movies all the way back to ancient pottery. Professor Jason Rosenfeld, who teaches art history at Marymount Manhattan College says,

“Here you have an image of a black male athlete in an exceptionally aggressive stance, wide footed, bending over, clutching her with his arm,” said Jason Rosenfeld, professor of art history at Marymount Manhattan College. “It’s one thing to have an athlete in that kind of pose and with that kind of expression on a court after he or she has done something miraculous. It’s another thing to couple it with someone who is of an entirely different ilk and gender. That turns it into a racially charged image.”

“When you’re for the first time putting a black man on the cover, and this is the way you’re depicting him, it means that you’re going nowhere,” Rosenfeld said. “Pose LeBron in the pose of a Greek God and pose her as a Venus — then you’re upping the conversation.”

LANCE ALLRED HAS TWO MOMMIES…AND HE’S DEAF

March 17, 2008

Lance Allred is not your typical basketball player.

Allred describes himself as a hearing impaired kid who grew up in a cult. He also had two mothers when he was born at a polygamous compound in Montana.

The Cleveland Cavaliers signed Allred, who had been tearing up the D-league,  to a 10-day contract this weekend.  He recently had a 29 point-19 rebound game for the Idaho Stampede, but it’s his background that has everybody talking.

Allred says he has memories of his childhood that still haunt him.

He recently described his troubled youth, “I grew up in a society where I was pretty much brainwashed,” he said. “When I was 5 years old and hearing impaired, I was told by a teacher that God had made me deaf as punishment because I wasn’t faithful in a pre-existence. Who tells a 5-year-old kid that?”

Allred and his family moved to Utah when he was 13. He was the Gatorade Utah Player of the Year and an honor student in high school. He played for Team USA in the World Deaf Basketball Championships in Greece. Allred then stayed in-state and signed to play his college basketball for renowned coach, Rick Majerus, at Utah.

It was a disaster from the start. Majerus immediately branded Allred as an underachiever who lacked heart. In a famous piece in Sports Illustrated, S.L. Price wrote,

“…Majerus reportedly called Lance Allred, a backup center who was 75% deaf, “a disgrace to cripples” who had “weaseled [his] way through life using [his poor] hearing as an excuse.”

Things became so bad that Allred transferred to Weber State. Although he averaged 18 ppg, and finished third in the nation in rebounding, his senior season, Allred went undrafted by the NBA. Many accuse Majerus of badmouthing him to NBA clubs.

Not all of Allred’s coaches speak badly of him. “People don’t understand what he’s been through. He’s been knocked down a few times with thunderbolts and lightning and always picked himself up and kept going,” says one former coach.

I’m sure, unlike Majerus, most NBA fans will be rooting for him.
