MICHAEL PHELPS PHOTO FINISH WIN
United States Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps edged Serbia’s Milorad Cavic by just over 1/100th of a second Friday to capture his seventh gold medal of this Olympiad. Phelps’ victory in the men’s 100-meter freestyle adds to his already record setting performance.
Although it was the only event in seven where Phelps did NOT set a world record, it was perhaps his most impressive win. He was actually in seventh place after the half-way point of the race. Phelps won the race with a brilliant closing flury.
Phelps is competing in one more event at this year’s Olympics. If Phelps and the U.S. team capture gold in the relay event in which they’re favored, the swimmer will have set the record for most gold medals in one Olympics. An eight gold medal would break American swimmer Mark Spitz’s record of seven golds.
