PITCHER IS A COUNTERFEITER AS WELL AS A WIFE BEATER

July 30, 2008

FRESNO GRIZZLIES PITCHER JULIO MATEO

Former Seattle Mariners reliever Julio Mateo has been arrested on counterfeiting and forgery charges. Mateo is now pitching for the Triple A Fresno Grizzlies of the Pacific Coast League. The Grizzlies are a farm team of the San Francisco Giants.

Mateo was arrested in Albuquerque after passing a counterfeit $100 bill to a cab driver. When police searched Mateo’s hotel room they found numerous bogus bills.

This isn’t Mateo’s first brush with the law. He pleaded guilty to assault charges last year after he admitted hitting his wife in a Manhattan hotel room. That incident prompted the Mariners to trade Mateo.

LATEST AIRLINE ATROCITY

July 30, 2008

Air travel in this country has become a joke. The service and the way major airlines treat their customers has become intolerable.

Delta has crossed the line. It’s not just that the airline recently raised their rate for a second checked bag to $50. Hell, almost all of the major airlines (except Southwest) gouge travelers. It’s not even that Delta now charges $175 to check a pair of skis.

No, it’s now official. Delta Airlines is evil. Don’t believe me? Check out this recent travel horror story:

The complete details are at gawker.com, but basically a woman with with muscular dystrophy was forced to crawl out of a plane, after Delta staff informed her she might make her connecting flight if she just stopped waiting for help. The woman was forced to wait while she was repeatedly told “it’s not my job” to assist her to her next gate. She ended up waiting EIGHT HOURS for help.

Delta gave the woman a food voucher for her inconvenience. However, the woman was unable to use it since nobody at Delta would assist her (apparently it’s “not their job.”)

SEATTLE THE LATEST WEST COAST CITY TO REGULATE PLASTIC BAGS

July 29, 2008

Paper or plastic? The answer in Seattle is, “Neither.”

The city of Seattle Monday passed a law requiring grocery, drug and convenience stores to charge 20 cents apiece for paper and plastic bags. The law takes effect January 1st.

In the past year both San Francisco and Los Angeles have banned the use of plastic bags for environmental reasons. Not to be “outgreened,” Seattle responded with this week’s vote. Earlier this year Seattle had banned the use of bottled water by the city.

Monday’s law also bans styrofoam cups and food containers in the city of Seattle. The city estimates Seattle residents use 360 million disposable bags each year (most of them plastic.) They hope the new law will cut that number in half.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL ASSISTANT COACH NEEDS TO BE FIRED IMMEDIATELY

July 29, 2008

BARRIS GRANT

This from the “Cuff ‘Em” segment at Busted Coverage:

According to police, New Mexico State assistant football coach Barris Grant obstructed justice and taunted a domestic violence victim last week.

The Las Cruces Sun-News says Grant refused to tell police the identity of one of his football players who beat a woman in the school’s parking lot. Grant reportedly told police, “I’m not going to give you s**t.” He then taunted the female victim who was being treated for injuries by paramedics.

DISGRACED REF TIM DONAGHY OFF TO PRISON

July 29, 2008

TIM DONAGHY

Disgraced NBA referee Tim Donaghy was sentenced to 15 months in prison today for his role in a gambling scandal. That prison sentence will be followed by three years of probation. Donaghy pleaded guilty to two felonies for providing inside information to professional gamblers and to betting on games, including those he officiated.

Donaghy’s lawyers had argued for a reduced sentence for their client claiming he is addicted to gambling. Maybe this is a bad analogy, but isn’t a convicted point fixer asking for leniency because of a gambling problem kind of like someone who kills their parents asking for mercy because he’s an orphan?
