MANNY RAMIREZ ON THE MOVE?
There they go again.
You would think by now the elitist Boston sports media would have learned their lesson. They haven’t.
The seemingly annual crusade to run Boston Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez out of town has begun anew. In today’s Boston Globe, columnist Dan Shaughnessy AGAIN villifies the guy who is chiefly responsible for the Red Sox ending their six generation World Series drought.
Shaughnessy rips Ramirez for missing ONE game against the Yankees because of a sore knee. Ramirez even had an MRI on the knee but that wasn’t good enough for Shaughnessy who called Ramirez “worthless” and “ridiculous.”
Shaughnessy titled his annual Manny-bash “Now He’s a Guaranteed Out.” In the column, he writes, “Manny has punched his ticket out of town” and “The Red Sox have had it with Manny.” Shaughnessy even threw in the phrase, “it’s over.” Since he’s Irish he added, “Goodnight, Irene.” Since he’s a closet racist Shaughnessy threw in, “Adios, amigo.”
What’s Shaughnessy’s source for proving Manny Ramirez is a quitter? He quotes a former state treasurer who “happened” to be walking by and “spoke for many fans.” Naturally, the guy was white and Irish.
Shaugnessy’s column continues a fine tradition of Boston sportswriting which demonizes athletes for making too much money and demands they be run out of town. Like Roger Clemens, Pedro Martinez, Mo Vaughn, and Johnny Damon before him, Manny Ramirez appears to be a goner. As a matter of sheer coincidence, all of those players (except Clemens) JUST HAPPEN to be ethnic minorities. Just like the politician Shaughnessy quotes JUST HAPPENED to be walking by.
If Boston fans are truly worried about overpaid sports figures who are stealing money at their current job and should be run out of town I suggest they start with Dan Shaughnessy.
