Boxer Kelly Pavlik is moving up a weight class in order to fight Bernard Hopkins. The lightweight bout would take place in Atlantic City in October.
The fight is a rare joint venture between Golden Boy Promotions and Oscar De La Hoya’s former promoter Bob Arum. It would be broadcast by HBO Pay Per View.
Pavlik is 34-0 (with 30 knockouts.) He would have to vacate his current title in order to fight Hopkins at 170 pounds. It also foregoes an immediate payday against Joe Calzaghe. However, it does set up an eventual fight against the undefeated Welsh boxer. Calzaghe is making his next appearance against Roy Jones Jr. at 168 pounds.
