JONATHAN AND ASHLEY PAPELBON
Boston Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon says New York Yankee fans threatened his pregnant wife at an All Star parade on Tuesday. Yankee fans were reacting to a story in The New York Daily News entitled “Papelbum!”
The story claimed the Red Sox reliever insisted on closing Tuesday’s All Star game even though the game was in New York and legendary Yankees closer Mariano Rivera was on the A.L. roster. Papelbon says he feels like the victim of tabloid journalism.
Papelbon was so upset he used more than a dozen profanities in his four minute All Star media availability Tuesday. He also says he didn’t care if he pitched in Tuesday’s game (he did.) Papelbon was “incensed” that his pregnant wife was the victim of insults and threats,
“I feel like I needed to be in a bullet-proof car. My wife is pregnant and she’s getting her life threatened. It’s stupid.”
