FANTASY GEEKS REJOICE!

The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear a case involving a Missouri company and Major League Baseball about fantasy sports.

MLB and the Player’s Association had claimed it “owned” the statistics of baseball players as well as the players’ names. They were demanding companies pay a rights fee to reproduce that information.

The Supreme Court’s refusal to hear the case lets stand a lower court ruling that says MLB (and other professional sports leagues such as the NFL) cannot own statistical information or the names of their players.

One expert from the Fantasy Sports Trade Association says today’s ruling is the “biggest day in the history of the fantasy sports business.”

Had MLB won its case it probably would have ended all FREE fantasy sports leagues by companies such as ESPN, Yahoo!, CBS Sportsline, and Fox Sports.
