HOW DESPERATE ARE THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS?

FORMER MICHIGAN CENTER ROBERT “TRACTOR” TRAYLOR (SEEN HERE ON DEFENSE) DURING HIS GLORY DAYS AT MICHIGAN

The NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers are desperate. Desperate and pathetic. Not to mention stupid.

According to today’s Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Cavaliers have signed journeyman center Robert “Tractor” Traylor in an effort to improve their front-court depth. The paper says Traylor will play for the Cavs Summer League team in Las Vegas.

That is if he’s not in prison.

The paper says Cleveland signed Traylor based on his play in Puerto Rico (11.7 points and 7.8 rebounds in the regular season). The article says several scouts have proclaimed Traylor is ready to return to the NBA. It also says signing Traylor will would mean “more toughness inside” for the Cavaliers.

Unfortunately the only “inside toughness” Traylor may be showing will be in prison.

Just a couple weeks ago, Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports ran a brilliant expose on Trayor. The article detailed how Traylor was involved with drug kingpin Quasand Lewis (who just happens to be Traylor’s cousin.)

Traylor has been accused of laundering $4 million of drug money for the same cousin. Lewis is already in prison. Authorities say he has sold an estimated $178 million in marijuana and cocaine over the course of his “career” as a drug dealer, making Quasand Lewis arguably the most prolific drug dealer in Detroit history.

AUTHORITIES CONFISCATED SOME OF THE $178 MILLION IN DRUG MONEY QUASAND LEWIS MADE

You might argue that a man is innocent until proven guilty-that the charges against Traylor are simply allegations until he has his day in court and is proven guilty. Unfortunately, Traylor has already PLEADED GUILTY to tax and money laundering charges.

Under his plea agreement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Traylor faces the prospect of 8 to 14 months in prison when U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn sentences him in a few months.

That brings up another point. Why is the league (or any of its franchises) allowing someone convicted on drug and money laundering charges to suit up? Even if it’s just the Summer League. After all, the NBA can suspend a player five games just for SMOKING WEED.

What’s the proper suspension for someone who has been CONVICTED of aiding one of the biggest drug kingpins in U.S. history?

All of this leaves out another small detail. “Tractor” Traylor sucks. He was a huge (literally) bust in the NBA. His career scoring average is 4.8 points per game. In fact, Traylor never averaged more than 5.7 points in seven NBA seasons. He’s also over 30, been out of the league for four years, and weighs well over 300 pounds.

Hey, but at least he’s a good clubhouse influence.
