70-YEAR-OLD HALL OF FAMER AVOIDS FELONY DRUG CHARGES

Baseball Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda won’t be going to jail on felony drug charges.

In fact, Cepeda’s plea deal was so lenient the Deputy District Attorney who arranged it has been fired according to the San Jose Mercury News.

The 70-year-old Cepeda was originally arrested on felony drug charges last May after police pulled him over for speeding. An officer found marijuana, cocaine and hypodermic syringes in Cepeda’s car. Cepeda plead no contest to a charge of being in possession of less than 1 ounce of marijuana. The cocaine and a hypodermic syringe posession charges were dismissed. He was fined $100.

According to Cepeda’s lawyer,

“It was absolutely the right disposition. His (Cepeda’s) wife is a diabetic, it was her syringe, and he offered to do whatever blood tests because he doesn’t use and wasn’t on anything. Basically, all they had was about half a (marijuana) ‘roach.’ “

However, many thought the sentence was too light and based on Cepeda’s celebrity status. Particularly since Cepeda has had a history with drug offenses.

In 1975 Cepeda was arrested for picking up a shipment of marijuana at the San Juan airport in Puerto Rico. Officials say Cepeda was caught with between 60-125 pounds of the drug. He was sentenced to five years in prison and served 10 months. That drug conviction kept Cepeda out of the baseball Hall of Fame until 1999.
