INSURANCE COMPANIES NEW PLAN FOR SAVING MONEY: DENY AMPUTEES PROSTHETIC LIMBS

HIS INSURANCE COMPANY REFUSED TO PAY FOR THIS 64-YEAR-OLD MAN’S BROKEN PROSTHETIC LEG

The newspaper The Tennessean has a story today about a new policy by insurance companies designed to save money. They are routinely refusing to pay for high tech prosthetic devices for its patients. Insurance companies are calling the devices “experimental.”

According to the paper, the plan by the insurance companies is to:

…deny people access to an artificial limb by allowing only one prosthesis per lifetime, labeling the more expensive computerized limbs as experimental or capping the benefit at $1,000 or $5,000 when the average cost is $8,000 to $15,000.

The insurance companies have been so blatant and so insidious about the practice that Congress is now considering legislation to make the practice of denying people prosthetics illegal.
