23 CENT PIZZA THE BIGGEST THING TO HIT OHIO SINCE…EVER!

It’s always nice when a giant corporation can turn a gaffe into a bonanza. Today was the day Papa John’s was forced to sell pizzas throughout Ohio for just 23 cents apiece. The pizza chain’s offer came after a proposed Ohio-wide boycott.

Ohio fans in general and Cleveland Cavaliers fans in particular were angered at Papa John’s because of a promotion they ran in the Washington D.C. area during the first round of the NBA playoffs. The company sponsored jerseys that mocked on Cavaliers star forward LeBron James. Wizards fans were given jerseys with “Crybaby 23” printed on the back.

Cleveland fans reacted with anger and were organizing a statewide boycott of Papa John’s. In response the company offered 23 cent pizzas (James’ jersey number is 23) for one day at select Ohio locations in the Cleveland and Akron areas.

The result has been chaos. People in those two economically depressed areas have lined up literally thousands deep for the pizza.

The secondary result of the promotion has been the largest amount of FREE publicity ever given a company. The promotion has generated huge amounts of free national publicity for Papa John’s but the coverage it is getting in Ohio is INSANE.

One television station is offering 24 hour coverage of the event. Many are going with continuous coverage throughout the day. The event has also required a strong show of force by local police to prevent “pizza riots” by hungry patrons who might get shut out of the promotion. Several franchises have literally run out of pizza and are being forced to issue “rain check” vouchers. No pizza after standing in line for six hours. Call in the riot squad!

Maybe I’m just a cynical, jaded media type who has received too much FREE pizza in his life, but this is utter insanity. Why in the hell would anyone stand in line overnight for pizza? It boggles the mind.

I remember something back from my undergrad days. It was called opportunity costs. Many people here apparently weren’t aware of this concept.
