BYRON LEFTWICH DISSES DAUNTE CULPEPPER

August 13, 2008

BYRON LEFTWICH

Newly signed Pittsburgh Steelers backup quarterback Byron Leftwich had some harsh words for fellow qb Daunte Culpepper yesterday, calling him “a fool.”  Originally, the Steelers were going to sign BOTH Leftwich and Culpepper after veteran backup quarterback Charlie Batch was injured in the team’s first preseason game.

However, Culpepper balked at the Steelers offer saying he would only sign if he was given a chance to “compete for a starting job.” Culpepper wanted a guarantee from the Steelers. That was never going to happen with Super Bowl winning 26-year-old quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on the roster. Roethlisberger is a Pro Bowl, franchise quarterback. The Steelers responded to Culpepper’s threats by telling him to take a walk and signing Leftwich. In a newspaper interview, Leftwich blasted Culpepper,

“Only a fool would come here believing you have a chance to start when you have him here. They’ve got Ben here and Ben’s a hell of a quarterback.”

Although Leftwich gets “only” $645,000, that’s $645,000 more than the unemployed Culpepper will get. Culpepper’s demands are laughable since he’s now flamed out with every team he ever played for (Vikings, Dolphins and Raiders.) Meanwhile Roethlisberger has thrown for over 3,000 yards in each of the last two seasons and had a quarterback rating of 104.1 last season.

TERRY BRADSHAW AFTER STEROIDS: MOVIE CLIP FROM FAILURE TO LAUNCH THAT SHOWS HIS BARE BUTT

In a radio interview with Dan Patrick, former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw admitted he used steroids during his playing career. Bradshaw says he used the steroids to recover from injury “not to get bigger and stronger and faster.”
