GIANTS RUNNING BACK BRANDON JACOBS
That was quick. Despite record jersey sales and record practice attendance and fan buzz it took all of ONE DAY for one of the New York tabloids to turn on annointed messiah Brett Favre.
The New York Post actually found a New York player to speak out against the new Jets quarterback. Granted it was a New York GIANTS player.
The Post got Giants running back Brandon Jacobs to go on record questioning the signing of Favre by the Jets. It’s not that strong a criticism, but Jacobs told Paul Schwartz that the Favre signing by the Jets “may not work.”
Still, it is a negative article. That’s one more than was ever printed in Green Bay about Favre. And, I’m sure it’s the first of many.
Fans were packed “ten deep” at practice for the New York Jets today. The occasion marked the first appearance of Brett Favre in a Jets jersey (albeit a red practice jersey.) An estimated crowd of over 10,000 and 100 media members were at Jets practice today. In the past the team’s practices have drawn about 2,000 fans.
Coach Eric Mangini has already announced that Favre is the Jets starting quarterback. That’s not surprising. What is moderately surprising is that the Packers Jets legend will see game action in New York’s preseason game next weekend.
The video game Madden NFL 09 will be released on Monday.
One thing is certain-the Madden Curse continues. The cover of the video game features quarterback Brett Favre in his Green Bay Packers jersey. EA Sports had originally featured Favre on the cover as a “tribute” to the 20th anniversary of the best selling video game.
Although they were behind the curve on the cover, Madden 09 already had simulations of Favre on the Jets out the same night he was traded.
The so-called Madden Curse has struck a number of players who appeared on the cover of the video game including Garrison Hearst, Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb, Eddie George, Daunte Culpepper, and Shaun Alexander. All had bad seasons or were injured during the same year they appeared on the video game’s cover. Even stellar players like Marshall Faulk, Vince Young and Ray Lewis who weren’t “cursed” with career declines or season-ending injuries suffered injuries and downticks the same year they were on the cover.
Snopes.com has a season-by-season breakdown of the Madden Curse.
BRETT FAVRE: THE CURSE CONTINUES
Legendary NFL quarterback Brett Favre has been traded from the Green Bay Packers to the New York Jets. The deal is for a conditional 4th round draft pick. The pick can escalate all the way to a first rounder if the Jets make the Super Bowl. Yeah, right.
From Jay Glazer of Foxsports:
How awesome is this? The Green Bay Packers have screwed up the Brett Favre situation so badly that they’re seeking professional help to get them out of their PR mess.
The Packers have actually hired former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer as a “consultant.” Fleischer currently runs Ari Fleischer Sports Communications, a sports public relations firm. The company’s own website says it can “can help you handle the bad news and take advantage of the good.”
Great. I’m sure it will be a piece of cake to spin why an NFL team would want to get rid of the winningest quarterback in history, the same qb who led the Packers to their last Super Bowl victory. Go get ‘em Ari! Whether it’s defending George Bush’s presidency or the Packers trying to force Brett Favre into retirement, it’s good to know some people will do ANYTHING for money.
BRETT FAVRE AND HIS WIFE ARRIVE IN GREEN BAY VIA PRIVATE JET SUNDAY
HAPLESS BASTARD AND FAVRE REPLACEMENT, AARON RODGERS, WAS BOOED AT PRACTICE SUNDAY GOING 7/20 WITH BRETT FAVRE WATCHING FROM THE STANDS
Favre meanwhile is due to report to Packers camp today to take a physical. Publicly the team says the veteran Hall-of-Famer will be allowed to compete for the starting quarterback job. Privately the Packers are reportedly frantic to trade Favre and end the entire PR fiasco. Today’s Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says the Packers even called their division rivals the Minnesota Vikings to let them know Favre is available. Yikes!
The Brett Favre saga is rapidly getting boring to most people.
However, both the Minneapolis Star Tribune and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel had an interesting item today. Turns out that Favre and the Minnesota Vikings were busted because the quarterback contacted his perspective future employer using his PACKERS CELL PHONE!
According to the Star Tribune:
“a source said Favre had continued to use a Packers-issued cell phone and that when the team checked the phone records it found repeated calls to coach Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell.”
Yahoo! Sports ran a banner headline that called Favre “idiotic.”
FOX NEWS CHANNEL HOST GRETA VAN SUSTEREN AND FORMER PACKERS QB BRETT FAVRE
Fox News Channel host Greta Van Susteren has scored a major interview. Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre decided to break the silence about his “retirement” in an exclusive interview with Van Susteren.
Judging from the feedback, Favre made the right choice. It’s interesting that Favre dissed ESPN and major sports figures like Bob Costas, Peter King, and James Brown as the venue for his “exclusive” interview.
Van Susterern will air part two of her Favre interview Tuesday night on her show “Missing White Girls” “On the Record!”
FANS GATHER IN LAMBEAU FIELD PARKING LOT
A group of over 100 Green Bay Packer fans gathered in the parking lot of Lambeau Field Sunday. They are demanding that the Packers reinstate “retired” Packers quarterback Brett Favre immediately.
