MR. ELISABETH HASSELBECK JOINS ESPN

August 10, 2008

BALDING KEPT MAN TIM HASSELBECK

Former NFL and Boston College quarterback Tim Hasselbeck has been hired as an NFL analyst by ESPN. Hasselbeck, who is married to television personality Elisabeth Hasselbeck of “The View,” replaces Sean Salisbury. I guess Stoney Case wasn’t available.

Hasselbeck fits the Salisbury mold in that he sucked as an NFL quarterback. Unlike Salisbury, Hasselbeck is reportedly a great guy. That’s probably how he stuck around the NFL despite the fact that he hasn’t completed a pass in a regular season game since 2003. Think of that. Hasselbeck was a professional NFL quarterback drawing a paycheck every week and he didn’t even ATTEMPT a pass for four seasons.

Hasselbeck got into 1 game with the Arizona Cardinals in 2007. He ran the ball once for minus one yard. Hasselbeck also played with the New York Giants in 2005. He never attempted a pass but ran for minus three yards.

Worse, he’s married to right-wing hottie/Nazi Elisabeth Hasselbeck and openly credits her for helping him in his tv career. That’s right, everything he learned about tv he got from Elisabeth Hasselbeck. I guess that means we can look forward to Tim Hasselbeck crying on the set this year.

SHOCKING: BRETT FAVRE’S HONEYMOON WITH NEW YORK TABLOID MEDIA IS ALREADY OVER

August 10, 2008

GIANTS RUNNING BACK BRANDON JACOBS

That was quick. Despite record jersey sales and record practice attendance and fan buzz it took all of ONE DAY for one of the New York tabloids to turn on annointed messiah Brett Favre.

The New York Post actually found a New York player to speak out against the new Jets quarterback. Granted it was a New York GIANTS player.

The Post got Giants running back Brandon Jacobs to go on record questioning the signing of Favre by the Jets. It’s not that strong a criticism, but Jacobs told Paul Schwartz that the Favre signing by the Jets “may not work.”

Still, it is a negative article. That’s one more than was ever printed in Green Bay about Favre. And, I’m sure it’s the first of many.

10,000 FANS AND 100 MEDIA MEMBERS SHOW UP AT BRETT FAVRE’S FIRST JETS PRACTICE

August 10, 2008

Fans were packed “ten deep” at practice for the New York Jets today. The occasion marked the first appearance of Brett Favre in a Jets jersey (albeit a red practice jersey.) An estimated crowd of over 10,000 and 100 media members were at Jets practice today. In the past the team’s practices have drawn about 2,000 fans.

Coach Eric Mangini has already announced that Favre is the Jets starting quarterback. That’s not surprising. What is moderately surprising is that the Packers Jets legend will see game action in New York’s preseason game next weekend.

VIRGINIA POLITICIAN LOBBIES OBAMA TO PICK BIGGEST QB BUST IN REDSKINS HISTORY AS HIS VP

August 9, 2008

HEATH SHULER: SPORTS FAILURE

HEATH SHULER: POLITICAL SUCCESS

What next? Ryan Leaf for Secretary of State?

In an opinion piece for Saturday’s Ashville Citizen-Times, a Virginia politician has come out and endorsed former Washington Redskins quarterback Heath Shuler for vice president of the United States of America.

Shuler is known to sports fans as one of the biggest busts in NFL draft history. That hasn’t stopped former Virginia state legislator George W. Grayson from lobbying Barack Obama to select Shuler as his VP. Grayson says picking Shuler would help Obama in Virginia, Maryland and the Washington D.C. area for the election.

I’m not so sure about D.C. I don’t think Shuler has many fans there after his stint with the Redskins. Shuler is currently a U.S. Congressman from Virginia.

BRETT FAVRE IS NOW A MEMBER OF THE NEW YORK JETS

August 7, 2008

BRETT FAVRE

Legendary NFL quarterback Brett Favre has been traded from the Green Bay Packers to the New York Jets. The deal is for a conditional 4th round draft pick. The pick can escalate all the way to a first rounder if the Jets make the Super Bowl. Yeah, right.

Jay Glazer of Foxsports blew everybody away on this story. He had it a full 45 minutes before ESPN or anyone else. Glazer broke the story on J.T. The Brick’s radio talk show.

DID TAMPA BAY QB FIX GAMES IN COLLEGE?

August 7, 2008

BRUCE GRADKOWSKI

A former University of Toledo basketball player was arrested today and charged with point shaving. The arrest comes a little more than a year after a former Toledo football player, running back Scooter McDougle, was accused of taking money and cars from a Michigan gambler to fix college football and basketball games.

During the time that the point shaving scandal was going on, Bruce Gradkowski was the school’s starting quarterback. He was also seen hanging around Gary Manni, the guy accused of masterminding the point shaving scam. The Toledo Blade says the FBI has often floated Gradkowski’s name as a possible conspirator.

Gradkowski played the last two seasons with the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He received extensive playing time in 2006. Despite Tampa Bay stocking up with a pile of quarterbacks, Gradkowski was not re-signed by the Bucs. However, he is in camp with the St. Louis Rams.

ESPN.com ran a brilliant article about the Toledo scandal last August. That story brought Gradkowski’s name into the mix. Since then, several other media outlets have picked up on Gradkowski (an NFL quarterback) and his possible role in fixing games. Before the scandal, Tampa Bay coach John Gruden was a vigorous defender of Gradkowski despite his mediocre pro results. Now, not so much.

One other interesting aspect of the Toledo gambling case is the role that Las Vegas gambling entities played in bringing the scandal to light. Kenny White of Las Vegas Sports consultants alerted Nevada state officials about questionable bets surrounding Toledo games. MGM Mirage actually took most Toledo games off the board in 2005 and restricted betting on the team.

The NFL fears Las Vegas.  This is just another example of Vegas being the good guy. They’re actually a policing force on gambling. Vegas is the cops not the criminals.

BUSINESS GENIUS BERNIE KOSAR FORGOT TO FILE HIS TAXES

August 6, 2008

BERNIE KOSAR

According to today’s Miami Herald, the IRS has filed a $228,000 lien against former NFL quarterback Bernie Kosar for failing to file a 2006 tax return. Kosar also owes money on his 2007 Florida state taxes. Not very smart for a guy hailed in the media for his business acumen and who’s also a professional football owner and front office executive. (Kosar is a part owner of the Cleveland Gladiators in the Arena Football League.)

Maybe Kosar picked up some business tips from Gladiators scumbag owner Jim Ferraro. Ferraro bankrupted the team when they were in Las Vegas and blew town owing everyone money.

BAD IDEA: STEVE SMITH REEBOK AD

August 4, 2008

STEVE SMITH

First spotted by Awful Announcing:

Wide receiver Steve Smith was recently suspended by the Carolina Panthers for punching a teammate. Yet, this Reebok ad is still appearing as a popup on ESPN.

PACKERS HIRE PROFESSIONAL SPIN DOCTOR TO HANDLE FAVRE FIASCO

August 4, 2008

ARI FLEISCHER

From Jay Glazer of Foxsports:

How awesome is this? The Green Bay Packers have screwed up the Brett Favre situation so badly that they’re seeking professional help to get them out of their PR mess.

The Packers have actually hired former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer as a “consultant.” Fleischer currently runs Ari Fleischer Sports Communications, a sports public relations firm.  The company’s own website says it can “can help you handle the bad news and take advantage of the good.”

Great. I’m sure it will be a piece of cake to spin why an NFL team would want to get rid of the winningest quarterback in history, the same qb who led the Packers to their last Super Bowl victory. Go get ‘em Ari! Whether it’s defending George Bush’s presidency or the Packers trying to force Brett Favre into retirement, it’s good to know some people will do ANYTHING for money.

BRETT FAVRE AND HIS WIFE ARRIVE IN GREEN BAY VIA PRIVATE JET SUNDAY

HAPLESS BASTARD AND FAVRE REPLACEMENT, AARON RODGERS, WAS BOOED AT PRACTICE SUNDAY GOING 7/20 WITH BRETT FAVRE WATCHING FROM THE STANDS

Favre meanwhile is due to report to Packers camp today to take a physical. Publicly the team says the veteran Hall-of-Famer will be allowed to compete for the starting quarterback job. Privately the Packers are reportedly frantic to trade Favre and end the entire PR fiasco. Today’s Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says the Packers even called their division rivals the Minnesota Vikings to let them know Favre is available. Yikes!
