ANOTHER SIGN THE ECONOMY SUCKS: CONSTRUCTION OF VEGAS ECHELON PROJECT HALTED

August 2, 2008

LAS VEGAS ECHELON: THEORY

The construction of the nearly $5 billion Echelon project in Las Vegas (where the Stardust casino once stood) has been halted. Citing a poor economy and trouble in “capital markets,” Boyd Gaming announced the decision this week.

Construction on the project won’t continue for “three or four quarters.” Up to 800 construction jobs may be lost with the suspension of Echelon.

LEGENDARY VEGAS GAMBLER AND CRIMINAL DIES

JIMMY CHAGRA

Only in Las Vegas.

The death of one of the biggest drug dealers in American history, who arranged the murder of a federal judge, is being met with tears. Why? Because he was a GREAT tipper and a degenerate gambler.

Jimmy Chagra was known as one of the most prolific pot dealers ever. The saying goes if you smoked marijuana in the 60’s or 70’s, chances are you got it from Jimmy Chagra. Chagra was the “undisputed marijuana kingpin of the Western world.”

When Chagra was eventually nailed by the Feds he had over $100 million dollars in foreign accounts. The government took it all. Las Vegas casinos loved Chagra because he laundered that money through them.

Chagra was known as one of the biggest high rollers in Las Vegas history. He often lost millions of dollars (of drug money) in a single night. Chagra may also have been one of the most generous tippers in Las Vegas history. He was such an extravagent tipper that journalist George Knapp tells the story of how the card dealers at Caesar’s Palace once bought Chagra a giant trophy in honor of the “gargantuan” tips the drug kingpin left.

One of the most interesting aspects of Chagra’s death was his connection to Charles Harrelson. Harrelson was the father of actor Woody Harrelson and known as one of the most famous hitmen and murderers in American history. He was convicted of killing federal judge “Maximum John”  Wood. Harrelson once confessed to having a role in the Kennedy assassination (which he later recanted.) Conspiracy theorists have said Harrelson was one of the “Three Tramps”  hiding in a box car on the railroad tracks behind Dealey Plaza just after Kennedy’s shooting.

Charles Harrelson died in the federal Supermax prison while serving a life sentence. Chagra, who confessed to hiring Harrelson to kill Wood, was acquitted of murder charges after hiring defense attorney Oscar Goodman. Goodman is now the mayor of Las Vegas. In later years Chagra tried denying hiring Harrelson. The fact is Chagra’s wife was arrested delivering $250,000 to him. Chagra was also on tape talking about hiring Harrelson for the hit while he was in prison (a tape Goodman got thrown out of court.)

LAKE LAS VEGAS

The luxurious Lake Las Vegas resort has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The resort has defaulted on a half-billion dollars in loans. It is located 17 miles east of the famed Las Vegas strip on a man-made lake.

Lake Las Vegas is just the latest formerly “hot” Vegas property to encounter financial disaster recently.

ARENA FOR MYTHICAL LAS VEGAS NBA FRANCHISE YET TO BREAK GROUND

July 21, 2008

According to Sunday’s Las Vegas Review Journal you may want to “hold off on buying season tickets for the phantom NBA team that Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman is busy courting.”

Billions of dollars in Las Vegas construction projects have been halted because of bank financing problems and the poor economy. Right now there are TWO proposed construction projects involving an NBA arena in Las Vegas. Both have yet to break ground.

The first is a total Ponzi scheme. It will never be built. That proposed arena would theoretically be built downtown. The contractor announced the arena a couple of years ago but has not built one inch of the project. They simply don’t have the money. REI Neon has asked the Las Vegas city council for multiple extensions on its proposal.

The more viable NBA arena proposal would put the facilility behind Bally’s on the Las Vegas strip. Harrah’s (a legitimate major casino group) has already announced it is pairing with stadium builder AEG on the project. Bank lending policies in the wake of the subprime crisis have already halted the construction of several casino projects. Harrah’s claims they still have access to the cash for the arena. However, construction on the facility was supposed to start this month.

So far, all is quiet in Vegas. There is no construction going on at Harrah’s with none in sight.

NEVADA SPORTSBOOKS MAY LIFT “ANTIQUATED” CELL PHONE BAN

July 13, 2008

The Nevada Gaming Control Board this week passed a measure recommending the repeal of the regulation banning the use of cell phones in casino sports books. The Gaming Commission will make a final ruling on the decision later this year.

Anyone who has ever visited Las Vegas knows that you can’t use a cell phone in a sports books. This idiotic regulation is VIGOROUSLY enforced. The regulation is so stupid that it is actually based on a 1961 law. That’s right. Only the government would base its cell phone and internet policies on a law that was passed nearly 50 years ago.

A Las Vegas blog has attempted to explain the cell phone ban. The Federal Wire Act was passed in 1961. It was designed to stop “runners” from transmitting information on odds from different casinos in attempt to prevent illegal bookmakers from “laying off” wagers. Incompetant government bureaucrats have been unable to find a way to change the ban. Even though a couple of little inventions like CELL PHONES AND THE INTERNET have occured since the passage of the original law.

Anyone who wants to know the odds of ANY event at any casino simply needs to make one mouse click on the internet. To ban the use of cell phones because of the hypothetical theory of bookies running paper betting slips around Las Vegas is idiotic beyond belief. The fact that the cell phone policy hasn’t changed since their INVENTION tells you everything you need to know about government bureaucracy and stupidity.

STOP THE PRESSES: SPORTS TALK SHOW HOST HAS ACTUAL SEX WITH A PLAYBOY PLAYMATE

July 2, 2008

 MONICA CHAIREZ

ESPN LAS VEGAS RADIO HOST PAULY (WITH MIKE TYSON IN BACKGROUND)

Las Vegas sports talk show host Paul Howard of ESPN 1100 is a member of a pretty exclusive club. As far as I know, the club is so exclusive it has a membership of exactly ONE.

“Pauly” is an AM talk radio host who has actually had sex with a Playboy Playmate.

There is an asterisk: *retroactively

The sex wasn’t retroactive but the girl was. Howard dated Monica Chairez when she was an up and coming Las Vegas model. Now Chairez is scheduled to be a centerfold in an upcoming issue of Playboy (CLICK HERE FOR THE PHOTOS –NSFW!!!!).

I’d personally ask Pauly what it was like to have thousands and thousands of men looking at your ex-girfirend naked but, knowing Chairez, he ALREADY KNEW what it was like to have thousands and thousands of guys see her naked.

Her family must be extremely proud. USC alum and former Clark County district judge Don Chairez, who ran for Nevada Supreme Court Justice in 2006, can’t wait to run again for office on a strong family values platform. Mark it down, Chairez is very committed to integrity.

Because of campaign contributions from lawyers and casinos appearing before them, said Don Chairez, a former Las Vegas state judge, “Nevada judges find themselves losing or bargaining away their integrity or independence.”

SPORTSBOOK DIRECTOR FOR TOP VEGAS PROPERTY QUITS

June 22, 2008

RETIRING MGM MIRAGE RACE AND SPORTSBOOK DIRECTOR ROBERT WALKER

If you want a better understanding of sports gambling check out today’s article by Matt Youmans in the Las Vegas Jeview Journal. The piece recaps the career of retiring MGM Mirage sportsbook director Robert Walker.

The article does a brilliant job of laying out the transformation of Las Vegas from the “wild west” of sports gambling to the corporate run $2.59 billion industry that sports betting is today.

Walker, whose last day on the job was yesterday, actually says he’s PROUD of his reputation as a “bean counter,”

“My reputation is a bean counter, which I think is a good thing. But you get labeled afraid to take a bet, and it’s not my money. Anybody can take a bet when it’s not their money.”

Many people don’t realize the top bet you can make legally in Las Vegas sportsbooks is now measured in the thousands of dollars not millions. Youmans also does a good job of explaining the daily give and take between large corporate casinos and the professional “wiseguy” bettors in Las Vegas.

THE SECRET LIFE OF SIEGFRIED AND ROY

June 6, 2008

FAMED LAS VEGAS ILLUSIONISTS SIEGFRIED AND ROY

Frankly, I was expecting WAY worse.

There’s a new book out entitled “The Secret Life of Siegfried and Roy.” (No, it’s not about THAT secret.)

Among the allegations in the book:

* Siegfried Fischbacher is a violent egomaniac who once hit a female cast member in the face giving her a black eye.

* After their beloved tiger Sarah died of kidney failure, rigor mortis set in on the cat. There was “no hope of stuffing the huge animal into a tiny furnace” on site at Siegfried and Roy’s house. So, they had the animal chopped up and incinerated so that Roy Horn could run his hands through the animal’s warm ashes.

* Animal trainers regularly got one of the show’s elephants drunk on beer.

LAS VEGAS CONSTRUCTION WORKERS STRIKE CITYCENTER PROJECT OVER SAFETY ISSUES

June 3, 2008

CITYCENTER PROJECT IN LAS VEGAS

A majority of union workers on the multi-billion dollar CityCenter project in Las Vegas went on strike Monday. The workers are striking following the sixth death of a construction worker on the project last week. A union official called the number of deaths on the project “unacceptable.”

CityCenter will occupy the space where the old Boardwalk Casino was on the Las Vegas Strip-across from the MGM Grand and south of Bellagio.

The strike (which has targeted Perini Construction) has shut down the $9.2 billion project.
