Actor Wesley Snipes was sentenced to three years in prison today.
That was the the maximum sentence allowed for his conviction on three misdemeanor charges for not filing his taxes. During his sentencing, the judge indicated that a major reason for the maximum penalty for Snipes was to deter others from cheating on their taxes.
Snipes was convicted of misdemeanor charges of failing to file a tax return. The jury acquitted him on felony tax evasion charges.
Snipes was not forced to surrender immediately. Instead the judge said he can surrender at a later date, somewhere nearer to his New Jersey home. During sentencing Snipes had many character witness letters written by friends, including actors Woody Harrelson and Denzel Washington.
