The city of Needles, CA is in the middle of nowhere. Literally.
Needles is located a few miles from the Nevada border in the middle of the desert.
Needles is also just across the Colorado River from Arizona. The city receives a lot of older “snowbirds” and a lot of these people chose to live in trailer parks. Here’s a recent listing from the real estate section:
The city of Needles most famous resident of all-time is Spike.
He’s Snoopy’s brother from the comic strip Peanuts.
As a native of California and a long-time resident of Nevada, I’m not trying to be CRITICAL of Needles. Just ACCURATE. It literally is a forgotten city in the middle of NOWHERE.
Unfortunately, Needles is 213 miles away from its county seat in California. City officials say this leads to their constant underfunding for services from San Bernardino County. The latest dispute involves the county’s unwillingness to help keep the city’s troubled hospital open as a full-service medical center.
In response, the Needles City Council told its staff to look into two ideas. Either form their own county or MOVE TO NEVADA. That’s right the city of Needles is threatening to change states. Secession from California would require approval from Congress, both the states of California and Nevada, and a popular vote by city residents. And, all of that seems MORE LIKELY than squeezing any more money out of San Bernardino County.

I work for the City of Needles, and I can’t wait to see how all of this pans out. From the information I have, the County offered plenty of money, their offer just wasn’t good enough for the City Council, so Needles is badmouthing San Bernardino County and saying that we’re neglected now. I could be wrong, but this doesn’t seem to be the case. Either way, pardon what my town is doing, we’re not all crazy – and if it comes to popular vote, I have a feeling that it won’t pass.

I can’t believe it and I bet you can’t either. We have our very own “Sharon Stone” sitting on our City Council , one “Sharon“ makes a comment about China and our ‘Sharon” makes a comment about Japan see L.A. Time Page A1 May 26, 2008. I’m sure both individuals are very well educated, but as Forrest Gump once said “Stupid is as stupid does.”
Maybe our own “Sharon Stone” here in Needles, could have just bashed South Central and upset the black community or she could have bashed our Indians, and let it go at that. But no, this Sharon Stone took on the entire nation of Japan. I guess Needles will be crossed off for any tourism and or industry from this Asian country.
Furthermore, it’s interesting both “Sharon Stones” live in coastal communities; however Malibu doesn’t have a 1930’s Claypool Building being remodeled. Needles does. Malibu doesn’t have the historic and famous El Garces hotel or train station. Needles does. Malibu probably does have a Masonic lodge, but not one that has been turned into a theatre with a new marquee. Needles does.
Maybe “Sharon’ didn’t notice the old furniture store has been painted, the three railroad cars and all of the curbs. Our “Sharon” probably chose not to use Webster’s definition of blighted because it mentions to ruin or to decay, she chose to bash Hiroshima where MANY lives were lost.
Thank you for your time.
